arte asha likes her jumperoo and is spending more and more time in it.. shes more the kinda baby though that wants you to play with her (not sure if all babies are like this and some conditioned out or some babies are more content to be on their own) so if i stay with her she plays for ages but if i walk away she only spends about 10mins before she wants to get out lol shes like that with everything though she gets lonly its alright though because she sleeps so well at night and is very well behaved when we are out...

Well I can not sleep so I thought I would pop on and say hello.

Art- We did not end up going to Big Pineapple as the weather was crappy. Oh well maybe next time. Love the photo of W.

Well I can not believe my baby will be 4 months old on Monday. I gave her a try on some Heinz pureed apple today and her face was so funny but she loved it. Next will be the runny weetbix.

hi everyone! been reading posts but haven't been on long enough to post reply (actually, needed to reset password since i'm not using my own computer so it's not saved). anyway, glad to read that those who've been sick are better and those who had outlaws with them are now outlaw-free.
really hot weather in perth but, luckily, my inlaws have got airconditioning which has been left on for most of the day...and night. never actually felt the heat. MIL hired carseat and cot for us but the cot was a porta cot which came to just about a foot off the ground which i refused to use coz' it would be scary trying to get her in and out of it while half asleep. might end up in the cot myself. :) anyway, hired a bassinet the other day for the rest of our stay. couldn't before then coz' shop was closed for xmas and boxing day. so we'd had her sleeping in bed with us. it wasn't too bad coz' someone had told me about having their bub in bed with them and what they did was to have her in the space in between their pillows. so, if they got to the edge of the pillow, they'd wake up coz' it'd be bub's space already. and because her head is above theirs, there was less chance of the sheets smothering bub. anyway, all good now with the bassinet. have to say, it was soooo stinky!!! had to have a real good wash before it was used and what couldn't be washed was sprayed with disinfectant.
for breastfeeding mums, was wondering if you could give me an idea how long your little ones feed (i.e. 20 mins per feed) for and how often (i.e. every 3 hours). this is coz' max has been rejecting the formula/bottle these past few days and i'm worried that she's not getting enough since she's just going with only breast milk and i don't think i'm producing much. am thinking it might be the formula (karicare gold plus...we use karicare gold at home...couldn't find it here in perth) so am also trying different formulas (only those i can get in sachets or small portions to try). :( just wanted to get an idea what most others are doing although i do know that each bub has got different "proficiency" in feeding so times will definitely vary.

Fianne - K goes for 15-20 mins in total (has both sides) and this is 3-4 hourly during the day. If you're worried, just pop her on more frequently while you're away (especially while it's hot) and then you can weigh her when you get back home.

thanks cally. i think that's made me think that i might actually have more milk than what i thought. max is usually on for 5 mins each breast before she starts to grizzle and tug. so a total of 10 mins and then we give her formula. been mixing 100 ml bottles but her consumption varies. sometimes she'll finish the bottle but other times she'll have maybe 40 mls. but as i said, these days, she's been rejecting the bottle. i've changed formula and she's been having them again but then i'm now thinking that i might actually be able to go formula less. oh, when you pump (if you ever do), how much are you able to bottle off both sides?

its been a pretty rough day here today Ashas been so upset and i am really not sure why at one point i gave her panadol and that helped for a while but it was back on after about an hour.. i feel like ive been holding her all day and its so exhausting when they cry all the time..
i put her down in her cot after her story and she screamed and screamed i did my best to try and comfort her while she was still in the cot but she just kept getting louder and louder untill i gave in and took her out... she then fell asleep on ou bed lying next to me shes so clingy she stopped crying as soon as i picked her up out of the cot... its very hot today i hope thats all it is... as i type this she is asleep on our bed coz i dare not more her to her cot... please please let this just be a once off and not the beginning of days of me having to carry her around and sleep her with me...

Fianne - I hardly ever pump as I've always been able to fit in anything I do around K's feeds so far. Last time I got 55mL total, 2 hours after she'd fed. Remember that this can vary enormously between different women though so don't stress out if you get lots less - if you get more then that's great!!

Noni - hope A is good for you tomorrow. The heat can really throw them out can't it.

DH's birthday tomorrow. His family are coming around in the evening for a bbq. I should be able to have all the food ready, K has been having bedtimes this week about 7:30 so I will be busy with her while the boys cook. Was going to make him chocolate eclairs (his favourite) but they take 45 mins in the oven which might not be appreciated if its going to be 30 degrees tomorrow!! Might have to do an ice cream run instead. Fingers crossed she continues her good evenings, she has gone 4 in a row now where I've put her down awake and she has settled herself off to sleep without us having to go in there at all which is great.

Hayley - Wow Jamie sounds like a very mature kid for her age. What a great help she is going to be around the house for you. Cant believe she even thought to turn off the monitor.

Queenie - Oh I so sympathise with you (as do many others in here) with the whole PIL situation. MIL's always think they know best. I swear sometimes I feel like my MIL thinks Maddie is her baby!

Noni - Its probably just a once off with Asha. Maddie has her fair share of rough days every now and then. No matter what you do you just cant console them, gets very frustrating. Glad to hear she has been very good with her sleeping.

Jazmum - Has Hannah's thrush cleared up? Glad to hear you are on the mend.

Arte - Oh no sorry to hear chrissy day wasnt that great for you. Next yr will be excellent when you are in NZ with your family! Hey well done on talking the sales agent commission down. We are expecting to pay about $7000 when our unit sells. Not to mention about $15,000 in capital gains. Far out!!

Leemar - 4 months WOW! Time flys. I'm nervous about trying Madeline on solids.

Fianne - Boxing day in Perth was a killer wasnt it? We stayed at home all day.

Cally - Congrats on the self settling. I'm sure Katie will keep it up for you.

Well I took Madeline to the doctor yesterday morning. She has gastro, but she seems to be getting over it. Yesterday morning I could not console her, she was soooo upset and all cold & clammy. That freaked me out big time, I called the doc straight away and burst into tears on the phone. The receptionist told me to come straight in and they were so good, as soon as I got there they had a doc see to her. I have to keep up her fluids and keep an eye on her temp. The doc said if it got any worse bring her straight back to him or the hospital. She seems much better today THANK GOODNESS. Was so scary I tell you, I panicked, threw her in the car (not literally) and I was in such a rush I forgot my shoes!!! Not to mention no time to brush my hair lol. Must have looked a right mess. But I was so appreciative of the receptionist and Doctor, literally as soon as I came through the door they were onto it and I was worried they might think here comes another paranoid mother, but they were both so understanding and gave her a really good check over.

Hayley - glad that bubs is better - that must have been so scary. So good of the doctors to see you straight away - lol at forgetting your shoes though!!

Hayley- I too was scared to give the boys solids. But with Olivia it doesnt really faze me. I guess the more kids you have the less hesitate you get. (I hope that makes sense) I am glad Maddie is better.

Fianne, I have never pumped so have no idea how much W drinks. He usually has one side for about 5 minutes if he just wants food, but can stay attached comfort sucking for ages if he is trying to go to sleep. My boobs aren't huge, it seems unlikely to me that there could be 180mL in there for each feed (like the books suggest) but I really have no idea. He seems to be getting enough so I don't worry.

Haley, that must have been so scary. I would probably be as panicked as you. Good to hear you found a good doctor - they are hard to come by these days.

Noni, sorry you had a crap day - I am sure it is a passing phase. Do you think her teethies are hurting?

Cally, good luck with K settling when your friends are over. Is she sleeping better in the night again?

thankfully asha went to sleep in her cot at 9pm like she usually does with a little fuss but no where near as much as we have had all day poor thing must be exhausted.. i know i am it really takes it our of you when they are screaming and the only way to get them to stop is to be cuddling a certain way... atleast i can stop the screaming though thats something!!
arte - yeah i do think she is having trouble with her teeth she has a really different cry when she is in pain its awful!!!

noni - glad Asha settled for you tonight. Hannah has been quite unsettled lately. Night times aren't that great. She's a real squirmer, starts at one end of the cot, and ends up the other end.
fianne - hannah feeds for about 15-20 minutes every 3 hours. Have you tried holding a bottle to the breast that you're not feeding off, and catching some of the milk that shoots out? I haven't pumped any this time around, 'cause i just can't seem to find the time.

cally - hope everything goes to plan for dh's birthday dinner.
we're off to the beach tomorrow for 2 weeks. I've aired out the portacot and bought a padded fitted sheet for it, so Hannah should be nice and comfy in it. Our car is going to be filled to the brim with stuff!!!! We had to buy a cage for the roof racks, so we could fit the pram and the cot!
dh will be taking his laptop, so i'm hoping i'll still be able to log in and chat to my bb friends :)

Jazmum - have fun down the beach, hope you don't get blown away!!

Art - no, she's not sleeping better overnight. We've brought forward bedtime (much easier to get her off to sleep now) and am trying a dreamfeed, but I still have to get up twice a night sometimes. It's OK at the moment because DH does morning play time while I go back to bed, but if she's not sleeping well again once he goes back to school I'm going to be a wreck!! She has been having better day sleeps though which is good. Hopefully the night ones will follow.

Well the eclairs are in the oven, K has her Dad Rocks Tshirt on, so now we're just having a relaxing day at home. I thought we could go out for lunch, but it's going to be 30, so we might just hibernate inside!

Arte - The Doctor I usually see wasnt working on Friday, so I saw another and he was just as excellent. The surgery we go to is about half an hr's drive from our house, but I go to that one because they are so good and therefore we dont mind travelling.

Well after a day of Maddie having wee leakages, I tried her in the crawlers last night and they are a perfect fit. So we have moved up to crawlers! Now I have heaps of spare huggies infants and snugglers small. Do they do refunds, does anyone know?

hayley, glad to hear you're over the scare. i don't know how true, but some of the people at our ante-natal class said that you can exchange them (i guess you might need the receipt) for the size you want? maybe give either coles or woolies a try?
jaz, milk doesn't shoot out of the "unused" breast...just some drops. think that would show how little the supply is? enjoy the beach. maybe we can catch up for coffee when you're back eh? and in case you don't get online, happy new year!!!
cally, eclairs...yum! haven't done any baking (or really any cooking either) since max arrived. there was a sale at a kitchen store here and bought a scanpan at 50% off rrp and got myself (finally) a torch....so, have to make creme brulee when i get back. :)

fianne - sounds like a good plan. my '2nd breast' doesn't always shoot out milk either. usually only after i haven't fed in a while. Have you asked Barb Glare here on belly belly?
i can't believe how much stuff we have to take. We're still packing!!!!!!! Hannah is having 20 minute naps, and it's driving me bonkers!! she's soo tired and just won't stay asleep. Little monkey usually wakes with a smile though, so guess that i have be thankful for that :)

This is normal at our house, sometimes it's three times, but she settles down pretty quickly afterwards. If not, DH gets up and shooshes her down (he copes better with less sleep than me)! Although we had a TWO HOUR stint last night where someone who's little and pink got up and thought it was play time (!!!) Lucky DH is home and I got a Nanna nap in today.

Fianne, TBH not sure how often we feed, maybe every 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on how long she's slept, etc (usually feed her when she wakes up, ravenous). Usually only give her one boob which she woofs down in record time (10 mins, tops). Sometimes if she's grizzly I top her up later or feed her again before putting her down. Not often though. If I let her suck for too long I end up with an engorged boob which is how I've had (mild) mastitis twice now! Just shows what a difference that extra bit of sucking can make on your supply. HTH Also, whether or not milk shoots out the other supply has no bearing on how much milk you have - it reflects on how the let-down muscles in your breast work (& also how leaky you are or not)!

Arte - really feel for you, missing family at Christmas. I'm missing home more and more and realising how much we want to be back there, how unhappy I've been for a long time here which really should be a good place to live! Thanks to DH's job we're stuck for another year at least, hope to get some good news mid-year though. Hope your house sells in record time for a record price :crossfingers:!

Have had a really restful day today, feel like I've needed it to get my head together again after the frenzy that was December. Mostly did nothing and can proudly claim to still be in my (rather lovely xmas pressie) pyjamas! Sadly though will shortly be heading out for dinner with ILs - would much rather schlep at home for the rest of the night! I feel like I need some downtime to wrap my head around starting another year - need to think about what I want out of 2008, what goals (if any) I will work towards, how I am going to organise my life so that I can move forwards while looking after my little family at the same time. I feel so different now that I have E in my life - my old goals don't seem to 'fit' anymore.

Fianne - W feeds every 2-4 hours, he has no particular pattern and quite often I feed him just to settle him if he is being a bit grumpy. I agree with MD that a squirty unused boob isn't a sign of supply - we seem to be doing fine and I don't even drip from the other boob. I read about other ladies that are like water fountains but the most I have had is a small drip. I only use breast pads because they cover the bra cup when it is folded down and stop the dribbles soaking the cup.

MD, I hope you get to go home soon too. DH and I were in hysterics laughing about how screwed we are when we get back - no house, no job but we will sort ourselves out and it will be worth it. I am also hoping my house sells in record time for a record amount!

Cally, we have been up twice a night for the past couple of weeks too. Until last night when he slept from 8-6.30am. It was fantastic. He throws in an all nighter every once in a while to keep me sane. We aren't up for long at night though, I timed the other night and he is up, fed and back to bed in 14 minutes. I gave up changing his nappy at night because he was hardly ever wet and it woke him up too much.

We went shopping for 3 hours today, W was happy to sit and smile in the pram the whole time. He even let me eat lunch! He is such a good boy to take anywhere. He has suddenly taken a huge interest in DH, every time DH looks away W squeals or grumbles until he looks at him again. I can just imagine him in a year or so yelling 'dad, dad, look at me, dad, DAAAAD!" He will get no peace lol

MD, IKWYM about the goals. This time last year we were planning to sell the house and spend a few months traveling overseas before moving home. It all went up the creek when I realised I was preg but it doesn't seem that important now. The only thing on my mind at the moment is getting home, not sure what I will do next. I am sort of thinking of retraining while I am at home so I can do a different and hopefully more fulfilling job when I go back to work.

Im baaaack! We had a ver y nice trip and Logan was great in the car. I think someone may have switched my baby though as I have bought back a demon child lol. Lets hope it doesnt take to long to get settled again.

Welcome back Katie, didn't you leave out a saucer of cream to keep the fairies happy? Must've been them who swapped the babies over LOL! It's probably just another of those lil developmental leaps about to happen, he'll settle down in a few days I'm sure!

Arte - Fantastic idea about the retraining. I went from being an underpaid undervalued employee in medical reception/banking/call centre work, to being well paid and much loved by my work through retraining. In my case, two years at TAFE (library studies) means that I'm now earning two thirds more than I used to. Huge difference in satisfaction levels!

WHOOHOOO! I'm wearing my fave pair of pre-preg size 8 jeans - They're a little bit tighter than they used to be but i'm just happy they fit over my bum! lol

talk about demon babies, Scarlet has also been acting possessed.. she has screamed & cried more in the last few days then she has all up in the last 3 months, it's been so upsetting & exhausting but she's much happier today. I'm so glad we don't have plans for new years, I'm still recovering from christmas.

Hayley ~ How is Maddy now? That must have been pretty scary - We're in crawlers too now. I've also heard that the supermarket will exchange un-opened boxes for larger sizes but i think you'd probably have to have a receipt

I think my number one resolution should be to not be such a control freak. Also to do nice things for myself (previous resolutions were all so stern and self-improvy), get back into the PhD, be nicer to DH and exercise as much as I am able to.
Jaz Missy is doing so well - apart from the screaming fits which escalated yesterday and today (is the Zantac working??), she is great! More smiles (especially for her daddy) and starting to have more purposeful movements.
oh, she's just woken - got to go; I had waqnted to ask people how they were!! Hope we are all sweetly aslkeep at midnight and that those of us in Vic get the cool change eaerly!

You're a crackup, Q! Re the screaming, are you adjusting the Zantac dose for her weight? Or might it just be tiredness and overstimulation after all the Christmas madness (bit of that at my house right now -tiredness not madness I hope LOL).

LP well done at pre-pg jean wearing! Do you have something specific you are going to retrain in or are you still canvassing options?

My poor cat has a broken tail - A dog chased her through the cat flap & because she ran through it so quickly it slammed on her tail... There are no vets open in the area today so i don't know what to do :( I've bandaged it up & she seems okay, just not very happy!

MD ~ I have no idea what i want to do, Trying to find something that i'll fully apply myself to is very hard... I was thinking children's services or something of that nature, in the mean time i'm going to sell my paintings - I have a bunch of them hanging in the guest room (I wasn't proud enough to hang them in public view *lol*), someone noticed them at christmas & everyone started asking how much they could buy them for, I love painting, I can do it at home & It'll bring in some extra cash until i get my plans sorted.

LP - ouchy on the broken tail, the poor little thing. And well done on the pre-preg jeans. I tried my size 10's on the other day and they went over my bum but my tummy overhangs at the front. The eclairs were very easy to make.

Had a good bbq last night for DH's birthday. K was overtired when everyone got there, we tried to put her down a couple of times for afternoon naps but she wasn't interested. Anyway she fell asleep during her last feed so that was easy - unfortunately she woke crying after 40 minutes. SIL and MIL were both offering advice 'oh she's got a sore tummy poor thing'. No she was just overtired!! SIL kept sticking her head in the nursery while DH was trying to resettle her. That wasn't helping!! MIL did the washing up though while she was crying so can't complain too much!!

Will be a quiet night here. Planning a very early night for me. Next door neighbours are planning a street party and cricket, so I might sleep in the spare room out the back.

Art - wow on the 14 minute night feed!! So fast. A little bit longer here, but we also have to do a nappy change. She went through a stage where she wasn't wetting overnight, but she is making up for it now!! Nappies are soaked after 3 hours.

MD - K settle quickly after her night feeds. I was quite used to the once a night feeds for the 6 weeks she did them, it's just taking me a while to get used to the fact that we're back to 2 feeds (but I think I'm going to have to) - went back to bed this morning until 11:45! Thank god for DH!

Fianne - Nothing comes out the second side unless it has been ages since she last fed (ie 6 hours). So not at all a sign that your supply is low.

Heading up to Canberra tomorrow for a week to see my family. K is likely to be spoilt while we are up there, but I am sure she will soak it up! So better go and do some packing, gosh they need a lot of stuff!!

LP - poor little puss! Make sure you do take her to the vet sometime over the next couple of days, my former wonderdog Beags was prone to tail problems and when it swells up it can affect their nerves in their backs, making them quite sick. Sorry not what you wanted to hear. The painting sounds excellent, will you branch out into eBay land?

Cally, enjoy your packing (LOL at extra stuff!) and your early night. I'll be required to stay up late for the ILs but that's no biggie after all the stupidly late nights I pulled in Dec, sewing! Hoping for a sleep in or a nap tmrw though!

hi everyone! thanks for all the feeding info. i guess i just wanted to see what "routine" actual breastfeeding mums whose babies are the same age (ergo same appetite supposedly) as max. it's sort of hard to rely on experts when they aren't going through it at the same stage as i am...or i should say, as max is. :)
cally, enjoy canberra and time w/ family. we're loving having time with nana at the moment. this perth trip has been a real holiday for me.
will be going to a friend's for new year's tonight. nothing big. just that today/tonight is the best time to catch up before we head back to brisbane on wednesday. they've got a little one who's 8 months old so it's really good going to a house w/c is equipped for her.

Gosh it's been absolutely forever since I posted in here LOL.

Well the whirlwind that was Christmas came and went in a flurry of tinsel and brightly coloured wrapping paper. The kids were thoroughly spoilt, but *santa* was a bit scroogy here - we went for quality this year and not quantity as by this time last year I was already throwing out the remnants of broken cheap-ass toys. The IL's god bless them always buy a lot for the kids, but not always the best quality, so it never lasts long. This year they did a lot better and brought some pretty cool stuff for the kids (not that they always brought the wrong toys, just cheap ones).

So now I have to deal with the kids all at home for the next 4 weeks and by golly I am looking forward to Erin starting school LOL. She will do my head in that child (I love her, I really do, but she knows how to push my buttons thats for sure ;) ) She's not bad, but very high maintenance.

Alister is just gorgeous. he thinks he is so funny now when he rolls around all over the place, but now we get the 'help me I'm stuck' cries LOL. he's also going through a lot of cranky phases, which I think it just developmental as he is in that terrible age of being just mobile enough to get frustrated at not being more mobile kwim? Erin was exactly the same and didn't let up until she started crawling (which thankfully was at 4.5mths so the grizzling stopped, but terrible because she grew up way to fast then). So I think Alister is following her trend for that. he's not like it all the time, but he has moments when it just seems like he wants to be more active. he is starting to develop good hand-eye coordination too now and can reach out for specific things when you hold it in front of him.

We still aren't in the crawler nappies yet - he's too lean for them, but the infants are looking small now. Hopefully it wont be much longer, but we aren't having problems with leaking though.

LP, congrats on fitting back in your pants. I could fit back into mine after about 6 weeks but mine are waaaaaaaay more accommodating than yours lol Hope your little kitty is o.k.

Will just slept for 3.5 hours. That is the longest day nap he has ever had by far. He has just woken from it so I had better go feed him.

Alister is really lean looking because he's quite long. He's not a hugely chubby baby as it's spread out over his length. I brought a new bonds wondersuit the other day in a 0 (which isn't saying much because they are a smaller fit anyway) and it fits him OK now. I also brought one of those new bonds easysuits (which I absolutely love!) in a 0 because I needed some warmer clothes with all the cool nights we'd been having and got the 0 so it would last for a while, but he fits it perfectly now. Trouble is that I need 00 pants for the length but the waists are all too big.

Well we aint doing anything tonight for new yrs as you can see (apart from watching sex and the city, thank god DP likes it too lol)! Just having a quiet one at home and more than likely we'll be asleep by the time 12.00 rolls around! :)

Well it seems we are going through a rough patch atm. This is a tad embarrassing, but it seems I have picked up threadworm along the line and I've just spent the day washing, washing and washing. The house is spotless. Maddie doesnt seem to have it (i'm paranoid and keep checking) so I have treated myself and got DP to take a tablet too even though he doesnt have it. Does anyone know how bad it can be for a baby this young to contract threadworms? Grr I'm so angry I dont know where I could have picked it up from, but I've been reading about it on the net and it seems that it is very easy to catch. :(

Hayley - Well done on the jeans. I'm the same, they fit but are VERY snug. Poor kitty cat!!
