It's lovely to see some activity on this thread! I've checked in a couple of times and no-one had joined - I should have started it off myself, but never did get around to it... I look forward to getting to know you!
DS was born 14 July. He's my first and I have been feeling very tired and overwhelmed! We also had BF issues from the start, and I'm still using nipple shields. He's a very unsettled bub - we've just started him on Losec for reflux, so hopefully that helps. But I'm also worried that his irritability is related to hunger as well? He just won't sleep during the day! I can't put him down because he just cries no matter how I rock or wrap or pat or shoosh him, but he will snooze on me or in the baby carrier. He wakes a couple of times overnight to feed, which obviously is fine, but for some reason wakes up every morning between 4am and 5am and is impossible to resettle - so I've taken to putting him in bed with me to get a couple of extra hours sleep. I've tried to follow a loose feed - activity - sleep routine, but DS won't sleep! I feel like I've been making one bad decision after another and robbed him of his ability to sleep! I'm torn between riding it out and letting him sort out the sleep thing on his own (do babies do that?), or trying to "teach" him to sleep - though he seems too young for that? And I suppose, I don't even know if his sleeping (or non-sleeping) is normal for a two-month-old.
Sorry for the rant! Can you tell I'm a little sleep deprived?
Lovely to have you join us I really hope the Losec works for or DS. What is his name if you feel like sharing? My 2 year olds both have reflux and what you said describes the first few weeks with my older son and Losec worked wonders I thought the poor boy would never smile. Are you getting it compounded? Worked a lot better that way rather than dissolving in water but It was expensive. Ahh routine after having the twins the first time round routine was my saviour but was a lot easier when formula feeding and with Caleb I have tried deman feeding but it just doesn't work for us I would get to anxious thinkin he would want a feed right in the middle of the big kids gym class or swimming lessons etc and ver had getting two 2 year olds to sit still in a public place whilst I feed. So he gets a feed at 7am and then another at 11am so I can make sure we are home from our morning activity by 1045 kids the kids lunch and sit down and feed Caleb whilst they eat. He was also thinking night time was from 10pm - 11am so I was getting exhausted so now he is on a 7 to 7 routine. Have ur bubs had their first immunsations yet? We were a bit late (9 wks) because Caleb had a cold and then DH was away for a week but got them last Thursday and have had a pretty miserable bub since. Did you have any side affects?
My boy's name is Liam. Yes, we're getting it compounded and it's double the concentrate of other formulas friends of mine have used, so we only have to do 0.5ml twice a day. But he has no problem taking it, so that's good. It's funny you should make that comment about wondering if your DS would ever smile - I've been thinking the same thing! There have been occasions where I thought, was that a smile? But today I got one for real. It was pretty special.
Can I ask about your 7 to 7 routine? I am really struggling with the "go with the flow" method with Liam. He's pretty much on a three-hourly rotation during the day anyway, so do I just have to start waking him at 7am? My issue is he refuses to sleep. I've tried everything. Rocking, patting and shooshing in his bed, dark room, quiet room, music, leaving him to cry a little, sitting beside the bed. He just won't sleep! Today I got two 45 minute naps out of him, after putting him down and letting him grizzle and soothing him whenever he got worked up. I wouldn't mind him not sleeping if I thought he didn't need it, but he is obviously tired! And I only get blocks of two or three hours sleep overnight, so I'm pretty exhausted too.
We had Liam's first immunsation at six weeks and to be honest, I have no idea if he was bad-tempered because of that, or if it was just more of his usual grumpiness! We have more shots coming up this Wednesday, so I'll let you know how we go.
Lee I hope Liam is doing better now and that you are getting more rest. Bella is the same with sleeping during the day. She happily snoozes on me or in the car but isn't happy about being put down anywhere for a rest as she gets too worked up. And I haven't been able to put her in a carrier as she smells the milk and wants to feed all the time. We are co sleeping with her at night and have done since the first few weeks. She just wouldn't settle in her cot even though we had it set up sidecar style beside me. Co sleeping saved my sanity. Now she is sleeping well (relatively speaking) and on a good night we average 4.5 hours or longer between feeds and now that her feeds are taking about an hour I am getting a decent block of sleep. Maybe you could try co sleeping at night? We did buy a F&P swing seat that she will sometimes fall asleep in but I havent found any guaranteed method of day sleeping other than on me! I think the young babies just need the closeness it will improve as they get older.
Re the vaccinations, we had them done at 6 weeks because of the high risk of whooping cough in Canberra. We noticed she was a bit grizzly on the second night but otherwise she was fine. FX this the same for the ones at 4 months.
Shannon, are you formula and BFing? You are amazing to be coping with Caleb and twin toddlers! Your routine sounds interesting. I admit demand feeding has meant it is difficult for me to do many things both inside
and outside the house. I struggle with making appointments and have to rely on others' understanding when
Bella needs a feed at an inconvenient time.
Having said all this I am amazed at how quickly she is growing and changing which has prompted me to get some professional photos done. Had her feet and hands cast last week for DH's birthday present. Hope he likes it.
Our third was born 5th July. Loving the chaos so far. My older two have reacted a lot better then I expected them too and I've been making an effort to spend some quiet time with them each day. We're all coping really well (thank god)!
