HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE
Sorry I have been late on writing back, I have been in Wollongong plus Xmas was just such a busy time.
How was everyone's xmas and new year?
Connie - I added you on facebook
I will catch up on everyone personals very soon.
By the way, Blake has 12 days till i can introduce solids, but can I start it now? He will be 4 months then, but I think he is more then ready to start trying lol.
-
Hahaha fuzzy I don't even remember what I said, but DH is a sports nut in general. He does play Aussie Rules (I guess professionally, because he gets paid), and funnily enough almost got drafted into the AFL, but he broke his ankle right before, and never tried again.
Speaking of AFL, I dont know if I ever told you guys, but Russel Robertson (former Melb player and he was on the tv show 'It takes two') was in our Antenal Classes with his wife. Lol And also Natalie Bassingthwaite (sp?) was at Cabrini having her baby when I was, and I have since seen her there everytime we go to see the paed, because we see the same guy!
Can I claim to be a celebrity by very distant association?? LOL
-
Connie - I checked out your fb pics, George is so cute!
fuzzy - I remember the midwives did that walking thing with Isaac when he was born, they said it was a newborn thing they do.. so cute, I'll have to try it again! Have fun at Rottnest!
Deana, I hope you had a nice break in Wollongong. Can I ask where did you get 4 months from for introducing solids? I've read ABA recommend 6 months for solids, and even World Health Org recommend 4.5 months?
-
Hello all,
Deana - what makes you think Blake is ready for solids? Apparently our bubs still have the tongue reflex going on now that causes them to push everything out of their mouths so it may be a waste of time.
Fuzzy - I love the pics of your Bali holiday on FB - what was the name of the resort? We were planning a holiday to Fiji in March but since we have purchased a block of land and will be building this year we may have to cut back on the cost a bit and are thinking of Bali. How did you find the place with a bub? Your a champion with all of those night wake ups! Pearl is yet to sleep through and sometimes I get jelous reading about other babes who are but maybe Chloe and Pearl will just start sleeping through one night and never stop (unlike these other teasers who keep slipping back into night waking) - that's what I keep telling myself anyway!! ha ha
Apes - like Isla Pearl is yet to roll but is also doing all the other tricks.
Belfie - I hope you are enjoying your holiday in Tassie and your DH is feeling better when you get back - nothing like spending time with family.
New years was pretty low key here. Although the town puts on the biggest fireworks display in SA outside of Adelaide and we were down on the foreshore to watch them at about 10pm and Pearl sat there mesmerised throught hte whole thing. I was really surprised because I thought she would be scared by the sounds but she loved it!
I will be waiting as long as possible to introduce solids, hopefully we can hold out until about 8 months. Mostly because of the food intolerance issues we have discovered due to the vasospasm thing but also because it is much easier when bubs are exclusively bf Pearl is only small and I don't think she will need them sooner. Another bonus is that bf babe's poo does not stink!
-
Chuckie, you're block of land is amazing!! The views are to die for! Congratulations!
P.s. We are currently building, and it's a b1tch! Lol

Has anyone else's child become a crazy hand sucker?? George tries to push bottles out of his mouth in order to get his hands in. Feedings have become a struggle, along with the fact that we can't keep up with all the saliva!
-
Connie - yer the land is great right on the water - we are pretty pleased.
Re hand sucking yep that is the stage they are at at the mo (Pearl has her hand in her mouth at every opportunity) I think it is an oral stage or something where they are 'looking' at things by putting them into their mouths. Also didn't someone else say they read that our bubs have just started producing their own saliva and have not worked out that they should swallow it?
-
Chuckie - I'm going to wait to introduce solids too. I just read the starting/introducing solids article on this site and apparently their digestive systems aren't ready yet, and bubs will let us know when they are ready, they'll be dissatisfied after more frequent feeds and that could happen between 6 and 8 months. And I agree with Connie, that is an amazing block of land!! Well done :)
Connie - yep Isaac is a huge hand sucker at the moment. He'll be feeding, then I look down and he has his hand in his mouth instead! He's so unco-ordinated with it though, he can't seem to decide which fingers to suck so he gives them all a go and ends up gagging on them. And drool absolutely everywhere :)
-
I hear you all on the drool! Being a tummy sleeper, Sam drools everywhere and then when asleep rubs his chin against the wet sheets. He now has a bright red rash on his chin! And as for the hands, sometimes I have to pry them out of the way just so I can get the bottle in! I tried him on some solids the other day. For those of you who are interested, I usually use their nighttime sleep as a cue. For example, Sam has been sleeping through, but in the last couple of days he has been waking up during the night for another feed. Obviously he is having a growth spurt and using all of his energy rolling and pushing himself around the playmat! So I have just started with some rice cereal. The timing is everything as if I do it during cranky hour, I may as well just be putting spoonfuls of rice cereal on his bib and save myself the trouble! When he is calm, he seems OK with it. Only managed about 3 or 4 spoonfuls before cracking it! And as for it being early, I started all of my kids at 4 months and have no problems with allergies or digestion etc.
As for my PND, my therapist has been a godsend! She is teaching me techniques for dealing with the older children as well as helping DH and I with our relationship which has been suffering for awhile (despite me being oblivious to it!) I have started on the "happy pills" as we call them and these seem to be helping to keep me calmer and stop my feelings of wanting to cry all the time. My dad started radiation therapy for his melanoma before Christmas and so it is wait and see now. The therapist is helping me to come to terms with what is happening and what to tell the kids.
DH went back to work today so I am stuck in the house with 4 kids and NO CAR! Will find out today how bad the damage is going to be. You know that it is not going to be good when you are hoping it is only a new key which will cost $300 and not the 3 or 4 thousand dollars a new part will be! Fingers crossed!
Anyway, going to have a Guess Who marathon with the older kids under the air conditioner. Lets' see how long it lasts before someone chucks a tantie! (And I'm not talking about the kids!)
Happy New Year to all. It is going to be a year full of firsts for all of us!
Hugs to all
Kirsten

Because my child has turned into this crazy hand sucker... his rocker isn't really doing the job anymore. He sits in there and wriggles and squirms, so much so that I think he will tip it over. Whats the next step after the rocker??
-
Connie definatly a activity center.. My profile pic has Bella in hers! It's a god send!!
Kirsten - big hugs and so glad the therapist is helping.
-
Yep, saw Bella in her one, and that's definitely what we need. I saw one I like online, but everyone is out of stock... OMG I just noticed you have the one I wanted. Where did you get it??
George had his routine visit to the paed today. He is now 8.4kgs and we're obviously happy with his progress. The paed is impressed with how the solids are going, and has told me to change his routine a little so that he is having solids first and milk to finish off the meals. He says we should be at 4 bottles a day, so I have to now pull back the late night feed we do. We used to do it at 11pm, but have been doing it at 10:30 lately. Last night we did it at 10:15 and he still slept though till 7am. He doesn't actually wake for the night feed, so if we push it back slowly, he should be fine.
He also said we need to ramp up the tummy time so he can build up the strength to roll over. He is kind of stuck between 2 ages now. He seems to have the size and dietary requirements of a 6-7 month old, the alertness and sleep patterns of a 5 month old, and the development milestones of a 3.5 month old. Very confusing!
Hope everyone is travelling well...

Just a quick one from me for now..
Chuckie - We stayed in two places the first was down in Belangan (south of Jimbaran Bay) where is it really quiet and away from it all. The place was called 'La Joya Bungalows and Villas'. We got a standard bungalow and asked for one near the restaurant. That way we had her asleep in there at night while we ate in the restaurant and could take the baby monitor. Or it was really quick to nip back and check on her. There were four other families staying there with kids under 3 so we chatted lots and hung out around the pool heaps. The second place we stayed was in Seminyak at 'Seminyak Villas Estate and Spa'. In a lagoon villa. That was nice too and close to lots of shopping. But busier. I preferred La Joya. Oh and we hired a car with a car seat and a portacot from Bali Baby Care. Cost about $220 for all three for 8 days

Connie, what unusual advice! I've never heard of milk being phased out before 6 months before. Did you ask him why? Milk is the most important source of nutrition for the first 12 months, and solids, if introduced at all, should be a very small part of the diet until 6 months. Are there health issues with George or some other reason why he has given you such odd advice?
I also can't fathom how you determine the nutrition requirements of an infant to be different to either their chrono or adjusted age. What on earth does he base that gem on?
Anyway, it's great news that he's happy with how George is going.
-
I actually told him I was under the impression that milk was the priority, and he said 'Not anymore'. He said that George has put on sufficient weight, and that as long as he is having 600mls of milk per day along with his solids, he will be fine. At the moment, he is having 900-1000mls.
I guess he based his requirements on the fact that a 3.5 month old wouldn't be eating solids, and drinking 900mls a day? I dont know... I think he based it on what George seems to be wanting in comparison to the average?
Anyway, I gave him at bottle at 7am, and then solids at 8am. At 11, I tried to give him solids first and he was pretty agitated, so I gave him a bit of milk to take the edge off, then the solids, then I finished him off on the bottle. At 3pm (after his nap) he had another bottle and drank 260mls. So far today he has already had 460mls and he still has 2 more bottles to go.

I have searched everywhere... dealsdirect had them, but they have sold out. I'm trying to get one off ebay now... None of the others seem to have the spring platform, and the others are sooo bulky.

Connie - I think you can get them at Target..
