Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Poor little David is having a challenging time :( well done for noticing his temperature and getting him to the hospital, it sounds like this could have gotten very scary if it had been undetected for a while. He is in the right place to get the help he needs because of you - you ARE keeping him safe!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Oh kalina, eivie is so right, you have kept him safe by being on the ball and getting help sooner rather than later. It must be so scary and feel so helpless having him being tested and poked and prodded. I really hope the worse is over and you can get him home and enjoy his squishiness xx

Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Thanks for the intro tegam! I'm waiting for bubby to wake for a feed with not enough time to nap and no one to watch him while I shower so I thought good time to hunt down this thread :)
Sorry to hear about David, must be sooo hard seeing them sick while so little :( As everyone else said good on you for picking it up early and getting him in for the best care you can.
Phy that's something my dh would do, use the 'holiday' to catch up on things to do rather than help with the kids! Hope your hip heals soon, sounds hard to deal with when you can't just rest.
Hi everyone else, hard to see and reply more posts on phone!
We're doing well, I'm worried bubby isn't getting enough food but it seems a bit early to ask for formula. My milk took about a week to come in with dd so I'm not expecting it to be quick... but he seems to be latching and sucking well! Still at hospital until Thursday.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Welcome Cattie, hope you're enjoying those newborn cuddles :). Don't worry about if bub is getting enough, their tummies are so tiny at first, only the size of a marble they said at our parenting class.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
On the subject of bub getting enough food, today was a good day for us - Lachlan has gotten back up to his birth weight! It's been difficult with the 3hr mixed feeding schedule but it's great to see him doing so well. My milk has doubled or tripled in the past few days and I am confident that we won't need to keep feeding him formula much longer... I'm off to express again!
Hope everyone is doing well :)

Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Welcome Cattie! Bring on the milks! But yeah that can take a while can't it. I think mine is in and has evened out. With DS1 it took over a week and I was hand expressing colostrum into syringes. It was a bit more straight forward this time.
Great news eivie! That's an awesome commitment to getting your supply up :-) go Lachlan!
Today we have our first outing and I'm leaving the house for the first time in a week. We are going to hospital for the hearing test. DP does not want to go and wants to go off getting pays for his ute. Have I mentioned how I'm trying really hard not to hate him?! I need his help today as last night was crap with DS1 having tantrums for a few hours. I'm exhausted. DP also is trying to go to a friends to help him move engines so I'm having to negotiate with him to go on a day that I don't need as much help with the kids. He is on paternity leave, not let's-get-out-of-the-house-and-do-what-I-want leave. Whinge over.

Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Phyrephly it sounds like you have every right to be angry with him, that's just not on! My dh was under the impression he would have time to renovate etc on his 'time off' and I let him believe that... Thankfully he's stepped up as soon as he saw the reality of life with a newborn, especially with our demanding feeding schedule. I certainly would not have coped with doing it all myself. I feel for you and I know from experience how much harder it is when you have a lot of pain... Grow up Phyrephly's dp!

Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Phy that is unbelievable hard and an unfair situation. The only thing that got be through DHs training and doing it all on my own for so many months was the fact that I knew how well he would look after me and us once the baby was here! He is doing some gardening now and some catch up with friends but he is always asking if I'm ok or if there is anything I need done first. Once the baby comes he will stay so close. Hugs.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Honestly I just want him to go back to work so I can get on with things. My work friends have left themselves at my disposal so I have woman support. He goes back on wednesday next week...
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I think we all get to that point but it's come about too quickly for you Phy! Some rest and help is not too much to ask
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I'll stop ignoring everyone now....WE ARE HOME! We got home today with a weeks worth of antibiotics & a follow up appointment with the paediatric team in 4 weeks time. It's so nice to be home & I'm glad that he's well again. He's already pretty much settled back into his routine perfectly :)

Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Is anyone else waking up drenched in sweat? I have been waking up around 3am completely soaked, it's kinda gross :p
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Omg eivie I am! I thought it was because the room was too warm but every night I'm soaked! What that about?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Hi everyone, lovely to be here ;-)
Kalina- I'm so glad he is back with you. I do have to track back and read up on what's been going on, but still. I am so happy for you.
Eivie- I have had sweat dripping of me for hours. I thought it was the room too. Hormones???
Yesterday I attempted a shower only to have every midwife in my room helping me back to bed. I was not ready. Been up since though so hopefully shower today.
Trying so hard with milk. Hopefully that will start to work today.
Bub has a lot of mucus in her tummy and keeps bringing it up along with whatever I've managed to give her. I just want to take all the mucus away.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Yeah hormones, I asked the mchn about it and she said it's similar to menopausal women and can last quite a while  I guess we just have to have a shower at 3am every day, have 3 changes of pj's every night and get used to sleeping on a towel! Is it selfish to say I'm glad I'm not the only one? :p
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Williever isn't that mucus awful? Poor c-section bubs :( Lachlan had it too and it was just horrible. It was gone after a day or so though. Is she getting any colostrum? It seemed to help but we had to express it because they don't like to suckle with the mucus making them feel yucky.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I'm gonna start some tummy time today to try to help with her gas too.
Still no name 😳 3560 g or 7 pounds 13. Length 50. Head 37cm.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I hear you all on the sweat! So foul, but I too am glad its not just me!! I don't remember it being this bad the last two times. Hopefully it settles soon. Breastfeeding is going well here, she feeds constantly during the day but is having longer stretches over night so that's good! I think she is having some wind issues but I think its because my letdown is so fast she is gulping milk in and its hard on her tummy, but that should sort its self out as time goes on.
Kalina, glad you're home!
Phy-Men just don't get it do they?! Sorry you're having a hard time, I'm glad you've got women around you x
Cattie-How's your milk going?
Eivie-Sounds like you're doing all the right things, glad DS is back up to birth weight, well done!
Williever-Hope you're feeling better today.
Hi to anyone else I've missed
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
How is everyone?
I'm still pumping colostrum. Apparently milk is coming in but I'm getting 3-5mls each time. Paed would like me to start using shield today. Should I listen to him or keep pumping? It's not exactly good flow....
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I dont know Williever... Can you ask for a lactation consultant to come and help you out? Wiyh DS1 it took a week or so for my milk to come in and I was feeding him 5ml of hand expressed colostrum daily. Its a hard slog, good on you for sticking at it :) x
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
My milk takes a week to come in. Three days puts a lot of pressure on us mummas
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Ok good. I'll just relax a bit! Boobies are huge and heavy so it looks good this time :-)
Hope all bubbas are doing well x
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
It seems a lot of us take a while for milk to come in. Do all babies lose heaps of weight if it takes a week? All the midwives gave me the impression that we were in a bad situation for bub. I'm not second guessing our feeding, just curious...
Lachlan is 2 weeks old today! Last night we put the onesie he was in immediately after birth and wow has he grown! I don't know if it will fit him next time it's washed lol. It looked so big on him the first day (aaawww... Dreamy eyes)
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I never weighed my babies after the first, I just looked at them and looked at them growing out of clothes ;)
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Hi Ladies, I'm finally home and on a computer! Glad so many of us are here now :)
Kalina I'm so glad you're home and everything is ok!
Phy any progress on dh? Hope you are coping ok despite his lack of help.
williever, are you still at hospital? 3-5mls each time would be awesome for me! I usually get <1ml :( But I never did express well. Keep at it, it will be so worth it!
lady-bug so glad your bf and little girl are doing well.
tegam still stalking you!
eivie aww... glad laclan is growing so well.
And hi to everyone else, sorry if I've missed someone. I'm heading back to the hospital at midnight for a feed so in somewhat of a rush. So I was discharged today, but ds (aww first time calling him ds :babyboy:) is still in scn. He hasn't had a good run, though nothing serious. At birth he was admitted because he wasn't breathing or regulating his temp as well as he should. Then yesterday admitted again for jaundice to be put under the light. Was meant to come home this afternoon but bloods showed not enough improvement so another day and test tomorrow. Been going in every 3hrs but I'm going to skip some overnight and express instead - at this stage he is hardly getting any milk from me anyway and has formula top-ups. Very tiring doing feeds/formula/expressing. Can't wait until my milk comes in!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Cattie do you live near the hospital? It must be so tiring. I hope bub has good results today and you can take him home.
I'm still in hospital.
Bub last night kept going into a panic not being able to breathe. Obviously haven't slept much. It was like the mucus was back?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
That sounds exhausting Cattie, mixed feeding is exhausting but adding trips to the hospital takes it to a whole new level. I hope bub is better soon.
Williever that would be scary, hope it clears up quickly.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I'm baby wearing because I want to and hopefully it helps with mucus. The looks I'm getting on the ward are very interesting. Only one midwife was outwardly positive about it. Interesting!
But lots of burps :-)

Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Williever thankfully we live so close to the hospital! Glad to hear you've started the baby wearing :) How's the mucous? Are you bf + formula? How are you doing? Hope you've managed a drama- free shower ;)
Thanks Eivie, it is tiring but ok with dh home at the moment... how is your feeding going?
Tegam stats are 3.75kg, 51.5cm, head 37cm. Thanks!
Bubby improved so we've taken him home yay! He seems like a real hungry one though, I'm doubting whether my milk supply will ever keep up :( We seem to keep needing to increase the top ups, instead of reducing.
Anyone already thinking of next babies? Are you guys planning anymore?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Finally found the time to go through this post.
Sorry to hear of the sick bubbies still spending time in SCN, hope they all have speedy recoveries. It's not nice to have to be seperated xx
Tegam- great job with the list. Bubs birth weight was 4015g hc-34.5cm..
I'm gonna try follow this thread from now, there is too much to go back through xx
Can't believe tomorrow my beautiful little girl is one week old!!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Cattie our feeding is going well. I'm putting him on the boob as much as possible. We've increased the amount of formula we offer but if he's had a good bf he doesn't drink much. I'm also lucky to have been lent a hospital grade double pump which means expressing is much more efficient so I feel like I have more time between feeds.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
Out feeding is ebm topped up with formula. Today we tried a nipple shield which did not work at all. It was a bit stressful. Try again tomorrow. Left boob is filled with milk but blocked. Currently have ice packed into my top. Rock hard and so sore.
The feeding/pumping cycle is so tiring, but I feel I am doing better than with DS.
Bubs mucus seems to have cleared. Maybe I'll sleep more tonight?
Going home tomorrow. Currently down to Panadol for pain relief :-) yay me!
All in all a much better experience to last time!! Yay!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
I'm so glad this time is a more positive experience for you Williever, you deserve that. I found expressing under a hot shower really helped when my left boob was rock hard and blocked. Just gently pressing and holding the hard areas cleared it and I watched milk squirt out for ages lol. It felt like a waste of my precious bm but I had no more blockages and the discomfort was all gone.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ September 2014
wannabubby it is hard to keep up sometimes! Wow a week old already! Seems like yesterday we were all complaining about pregnancy and babies not coming. Well I guess for some it really was yesterday... anyway....
Eivie envious of the double pump! So much easier when I was pumping at hospital. I'm pumping so little milk that dh convinced me it's not worth keeping for now, which makes it easier I just rinse the pump no thorough cleaning in between. Hope we can both stop pumping altogether soon!
Williever are you excited about going home? How has your ds been? Ouch about the boob, but good sign of milk production? Hope you can get bubs directly on soon. And taking bubs home goes well tmrw :)
