Hi everyone, just a quick one from me cos I need to nap! LOL We had a rough night the night before last with wind....I hate wind....Hunter is such a good boy at burping and farting for that matter but he was very unsettled the whole night...up every 2 hours - sorry if anyone is getting up that often - I think we are spoilt as he seems to recognise night from day and doesnt stay awake in the nighttime - straight to sleep after feeding and burping :-) Thankfully last night he was back to his 4 hour routine - happy mummy! I am someone who likes to sleep though so I still need an afternoon nap! I did all the feeds last night though, DP went to bed at 7pm - poor thing was so tired - he is very hands on and is happy to do the early morning feed. I let him sleep in this morning, but then he woke at 630 and decided we were going on a family adventure - first trip to the beach - DP went surfing and bub and I went for a walk. I realised that I am unfit and it is really hard to feed a newborn when the wind is blowing...but I got there. My first lot of exercise - I am so unfit - but need to lose my fat bum so it has to be done and Hunter likes the pram!

Traylee - Hunter is on Karicare and it is also 50ml lots...he is having 100mls at each feed. The midwife told me he should be having 90mls when we went back last Sunday - on the Friday they told me 50mls and didnt tell me to increase it - stupid midwifes I swear we are meant to be mindreaders! But he seems content with that much (he is having 6-7 feeds a day). They said something about multiplying weight in kg by 150, and this will give you how much they should be having daily....I think! :-)

    Hiya Phoenix!

For EBM, it needs to be reheated in the bottle, sitting in a container of boiling water....microwaving breast milk kills the nutrients in it (basically making it pointless!).
The easiest way is to find a jug or bowl to sit the bottle in, then pour the boiling water around the bottle until its slightly higher than the level of the milk in the bottle.
    (I hope that makes sense!).

Temperature wise, it should basically be, as you said, body temperature. To check it, turn you hand over (palm side up), and drip a couple of drops of milk onto your wrist...you should either not be able to feel the milk, or it should just feel wet...if it feels cold...its too cold...if it feels hot, its too hot.

I've been told in the past that bubs drink less breast milk than formula to satisfy themselves, so for example, children who drink 150ml of formula, may only drink 100 of ebm.

I would recommend for the first couple of times you try and prepare 100ml, and see how much gets taken, it might be a little bit of trial and error til you work out how much is needed.

Its also recommended that you dispose of whatever is not used after an hour or so...up until then, you can keep it warm in the water in case bubs wants to come back to it.

If you need any more help, feel free to pm me, or facebook message me (I get notifications for them, rather than remembering to come in and check!)

Oh also, you can store EBM in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Traylee - Thats no good sorry to hear Scarlet isn't taking to the Heinz. I guess it doesn't agree with her. My cousin uses Nan, I'm not sure what it's like tho. I do know that Karicare is good too tho. I have used that before.

BW - I didn't realize that putting breast milk in the microwave wasn't good. I used formula with Cooper from 3 months, I didn't really express. I only expressed a few times before putting him on formula just to see how he would go with a bottle. I expressed straight into the bottle and gave it to him straight away.

Elijah did the biggest poo before, I took his nappy off to change it, and he weed everywhere, so I put a cloth nappy under his bum, and lucky I did, cos my goodness, I don't know where he was keeping it because he has been pooping with every feed so far! He sure is a poop factory. Lol!

yea i dunno what to use, or keep using s26,
i think in hossy they gave me s26 gold to use but i only used 2 little jars lol
i might get a sample pack and see about them

i was thinking nan but it contains phenalaline, (and on news reports they say that causes cancer and crap) i dunno lol, same as sugar free crap

my friend used karicare and made her boy cranky all the time,
i guess its trial and error and i gotta keep trying lol

Traylee - I think the one in the hospital was the normal s26 - at least the one I got was the normal one. I thought the gold was worse for constipation than the normal formula! I think it is best to disregard what didnt work for others as it is different for each child....so many people swear by a certain brand which works for them but is a complete disaster for another. I found Hunter spewed heaps on the S26 but not so much on the Karicare...he still does but they are not projectile or really big ones. It sucks you are having a bit of trouble with getting one that works. Hope you are able to find one you are happy with really soon.

Sleepy - I feel your pain...Hunter has been doing big poos too and we have had a couple of wees that have come when we were least expecting it...oh the joys of having a son LOL! Hunter also after doing a big poo, decides while you are wiping that he will do some more poos!

Hi to everyone else - I cant see anymore posts so cant do personals, hopefully everyone is getting some cuddles and managing some sleep! :-)

Yeah it's all trial and error unfortuneately. Lol. Maybe go into a chemist and see if they have any sample packs you can use. Or even try ringing the formula companies and ask them for trial packs....it might work lol.

Other than that, just keep trying different ones until you find the right one, just hope it doesn't cost too much!

is the karicare a thcker one like s26,
i think the heinz might be to runny for her hence the realy bad puking,

the gold formula in s26 has same amount of iron as the normal one and i thought that was what made her constipated,

are you using karicare gold, or just a plain one,

traylee: Isn't it frustrating when you can't work out what one you need...they used to make little cans of formula, but they stopped making them, which is annoying when you are trying to find the right one!
You can get s26 and karicare in an AR formulation, they contain a thickener which helps the formula thicken in the stomach....its designed for reflux babies, and the thickening helps prevent it from coming back up.
In general formulas are all the same consistency (well, thats been my experience), but the AR (Anti-Reflux) ones get thicker as they cool down.

Is it possible that Eli has a lactose sensitivity. I think there is at least one formula thats available from the supermarket that seems to help with this...and theres one (which used to be chemist only, but may now be available in the supermarket) called Lactogen...I used to look after a little girl who chucked alot on formula, but when she went onto the lactogen it all settled down.
She wasn't lactose intolerant as such, and went on to cows milk at 12 months etc, and could eat cheese and yoghurt etc once solids were introduced...
It is a common thing...perhaps thats worth a shot?

The only drawback is, I know that there are no sample sachets available for lactogen....

BabyWrangler - Elijah is breast fed. I had Cooper on formula. So I'm not having any problems. Lol. I was ust telling traylee about my experience with formula when I fed Cooper.

I don't intend on putting Elijah on formula, at least not for a few months yet. We shall see how he goes. Cooper wasn't getting enough from my breast milk. But Eli seems to be doing just fine, apart from being affected by what I eat.

I wonder how our labouring mummies are doing.....

I'm finally back in here! I haven't had time to scratch myself!!!

My mum left on Fri morning and friends of ours arrived Fri afternoon. We have had lots of visitors in and out of here, but it has been nice. Our friends headed off this afternoon at nap time, but unfortunately I didn't get to have a nap as I have 4 bags to pack! I forgot how much you need to take away with a newborn baby!!! My car is full with 2 car seats and the pram pretty much takes up the entire boot (we drive a Commodore!) so goodness knows where the bags are going to go! So we're headed to SYD so H can meet my very sick grandad. It is going to be very sad as I don't know that we'll back down there before the cancer gets the better of him. I am just ever so greatful that he has made it this far and does get to meet my beautiful baby girl.

I am going to try my best to jump on here while I am down there, but it is going to be a busy few days so if not, I'll be back on Wednesday!

I hope you are all enjoying your babymoon. I am so glad to see everyone still in here, even if you were lucky enough to meet your bubby's before May 1st!

Take care ladies, I wish you plenty of sleep!

Well ladies, I have to say that however we are feeding our bubs, it seems to be a trial and error thing - either finding the right formula, or figuring out which foods we shouldn't eat and dealing with leaking BB's (yep, kinda over that, so glad to hear it will settle down eventually)!

AFM - Bos woke about midnight for a feed and didn't sleep again til about 11:45am this morning, apart from 2 or 3 x 15 minute catnaps. Scored! Not! He had such bad tummy pains, we couldn't put him down and he wouldn't go in the sling either so DH and I had to tag-team all night and morning. I was feeling pretty close to losing it by the time he finally settled, so glad he seems to be over it now. He was perfect at my parents house yesterday!

Bos had his first chiropractic adjustment today too, which he slept through (one of the 15 minute naps!). It was straight after that that he decided to settle.

Pish - Enjoy your trip to Sydney - hope your grandfather enjoys meeting H.

    *Next Question*
What is everyone's settling routine/strategy? Do you cuddle/hold bub until they're asleep or just sleepy before you put them down? Do you pick them up straight away when they cry or comfort in the cot/bassinet or leave them to cry for a set amount of time?

    Take care everyone!
