The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) machine is probably better known as the $100 laptop - they were pretty big in the news last year. The idea behind them being a cheap to produce laptop so that EVERY child can have one. They have been getting distributed to poor areas where computer education for kids has previously been unheard of. Most of this has been overseas in countries like Africa and Brazil, but we have an organisation here in Australia distributing them to small communities in the Northern Territory, etc. They're REALLY awesome little laptops and provide the kids with an excellent foundation to understand computers, networking, programming, etc. And they're soooo cute and designed to be unbreakable by little people! They fold up into a little green and white case shape complete with handle and padding in case of drops and bumps!
We have one here as a development machine. The first few batches were given to programmers in the linux community so that we could develop software for them and help remove any problems remaining with the operating system and the applications already on there. It will be a perfect little toy for Alyssa to play with once she's interested in computers =)
