Is the depo injection or implanon ok to have while breastfeeding? If not, is there any other form of contraception that is safe besides the mini pill and condoms???
I just saw my obstetrician yesterday and she said the implanon is okay to have while breastfeeding. I also checked their brochure and it was used successfully with woman breastfeeding babies up to six months. I haven't had the implant before, but think I will go back for it soon.
I had the Mirena IUS put in when Lucy was 10 weeks old. It releases a hormone straight into your uterus and can stay in for up to five years. It is safe for bf as it only releases a tiny amount of hormone. It's best for women for have had a baby (as opposed to those who haven't). A little uncomfortable to put in, but nothing painful.
Great side benefit is that it makes the lining on your uterus so 'thin' while using it it can stop your periods completely. I had two periods after Lucy (so much for bf being a contraceptive!) and nothing since!!! Some women report a lower libido and have had some troubles with the IUS but I haven't had any complaints. It can be taken out by a GP, so you don't necessarily have to go back to your ob to have it removed.
Depo Provera
An intramuscular injection taken every 12 weeks.
Safe to use during breastfeeding.
Best to be started six weeks post-delivery to reduce bleeding problems.
Is effective in seven days.
Efficacy rate is 99 percent or greater.
Also other safe methods of contraception are ~ IUD, (mirena or copper), diaphragm or a cervial cap, lastly the most reliable albeit boring choice - abstinence.
