    Contraception and bfing

I am currently looking at the options for contraception as Tom is now 7 months and AF has returned so I can no longer rely on bfing (I know that bfing isn't always safe but for various reasons I was happy to rely on it until 6 months or until AF returned). My problem is that I can't take the mini-pill due to side-effects. This doesn't leave me with many options. I am hoping some of you might be comfortable enough to share what you do, so I can find out what works or doesn't work for people. Also, is anyone using a Mirena? I have had this suggested a possible option. Thanks in advance.

Hi Melanie, there is quite a long thread about the mirena here.
I have one and I haven't encountered any problems with it at all. I have a small bleed after it was inserted and a bit of spotting over the next fortnight or so and since then I haven't had a single period.
I think it's worth a try because if it doesn't work for you it's easy to remove.
I'm still breastfeeding almost a year later so it definately hasn't intereferd with breastfeeding.

Thanks heaps Chloe. I'm glad it has worked for you. That's really helpful to know.

Hi Melanie, I'm not so sure if this is what you're after, but there are other low dose combined pill options available for BFing (not mini-pills). Might be worth discussing with your GP?
