    Periods & Breastfeeding

I didn't go through it with Alexzander as he was formula fed, so I'm new to all this! AF arrived for the first time last night & I was wondering if I can expect it to be regular from now on or is it likely to take a while to regulate? And also does it mean I am definitely ovulating?

    Hey hon,

From my experience, if it has taken this long to come back, it will definitely take a while to regulate. However, I could be wrong, it does differ for each woman. I got AF back at 5wks PP and it is still not regular now, 2 months after weaning. It did get 'more regular' once I was down to two feeds per day.

It is hard to tell if you are definitely ovulating, however one would assume so, as generally you need to to get AF.

Mine came back in December, then the next one wasn't til about 2 weeks ago. There was about 7 weeks in between.
I'm still BFing & was only down on feeds while he was sick for 2 or 3 days when it returned, so I don't think I'm ovulating yet, but now that its back I am planning to go & get my depo soon.

(You can't fall pg when not getting any, so I'm not stressing too much atm!!)

My girls were only BFed for the first 4 - 6 weeks & AF still didn't return til they were about 4 - 5 months old.
It was kinda regular from return then though I think.

So it could be a bit all over the place ATM.

Skye, just be careful as you may catch the eggie the first time you ovulate before getting AF, there are quite a few ladies around here that that has happened to! I would go get the depo now just to be on the safe side.

Sarah, my period returned when Jake was 10 months old and they have been quite irregular. I am still bf morning and night. I think it is pretty normal to take a while to get back to a regular cycle

I got mine back when DS was 8 months, had three cycles before falling prg again. And yes, they were regular 28 day cycles (which I hadn't had since my surgery pre IVF which was interesting...) but this differs from person to person and some women remain quite irregular while b'feeding.

And no, just because you're having a period, even a regular period, does not necessarily mean you're ovulating. My plan was to go and have some blood tests done to see if I was or not (for contraceptive purposes) but we didn't get that far - thankfully the universe had other plans for us!
