    Ovestin Creme

My doctor prescribed ovestin creme for me. It's an intravaginal creme which she said would help increase lubrication as the vagina can be quite dry for women who breastfeed.

However, I read the leaflet that comes with the creme and it describes the creme as containing oestriol (a female hormone) which is used for hormone replacement therapy during menopause. There is also a warning that, if breastfeeding, small amounts of the active oestriol can be excreted in the breastmilk and milk production could also be reduced.

Has anyone used this creme? I'm hesitant to use it just to increase lubrication if it has those side effects. And also don't think I can be bothered applying it every day for 30 days unless there are some other benefits. I'd prefer just to use a tube of lubricant as required.

    Hi Kate,
I would ring your local chemist and check with them just to be on the safe side. When I left hospital I was given all sorts of prescriptions and then after speaking with my midwife found out that the obstetrician I had was a rotating intern and had only been there a week and didn't really know what he was talking about. I find it better to check and be on the safe side for my own sanity. I double checked on everything when I was pregnant and found my chemist to be really helpful, it's only a quick phone call and will give you peace of mind. I found my chemist to much better informed about whats safe to use in pregancy and breastfeeding than my local GP, lol.
