I had one put in under a general a few years back. It was $40-odd for the mirena itself, but if you have a HCC I'm not sure if it will be for the $5.80 or whatever it is now for a script, unless it's not on the PBS? And youwill pay for the anaesthetist, which can be a significant amount of money depending on how long you're under the GA for. I'm guessing you are going public? If it is fully public, then you wont pay for any of that, as medicare will pay for it. But if you are going as a private patient you will need to pay for the short stay in hospital as you recover from the GA too, which will be a minimum of a few hours. If you are having a general, you will not be allowed to drive yourself home so you will need someone to pick you up. The general will mean you need to be in a hospital too and not in his surgery.
I had mine done at a clinic without any anaesthetic. It didn't hurt and I could drive straight afterwards. I think you need to call your doctor and clarify though as getting it done under a general would be a very different scenario involving hospital and a longer stay.
Usually they would only put it in with a general if they were doing something else or if there were other concerns. I had mine done under a general as part of Lap surgery.
When I was thinking of getting 1 I was told that given I had not had a vaginal birth there may be a chance that it can't be inserted in clinic room and may need to have a GA. But OB was willing to have a try as I had got to 9cm.
As for BF yes you can feed after as it will only be a light general for a short time.
