Normally we use a combination of NFP (natural family planning) and withdrawal. I know my cycle and have a general idea of when I'm ovulating. We use withdrawal or condoms up to ovulation and dont bother after. Obviously there is some risk in this method. Otherwise, a diaphragm may help.

    BUMP for this one!

I'm after exactly the same, for the same reasons!

    Any help much appreciated.

You could get fitted for a diaphragm, although it isn't 'permanent' it can be inserted at a time that's not quite so disruptive.
Your other option I think would be a copper IUD - I don't think they have hormones? Not like the Mirena anyway.
FWIW, I have said it before but I can't recommend the vasectomy enough, lol. But obviously when you are sure you are ready.
