Sorry I hope this is the right place to post this.
I am just a little upset/angry/confused after receiving a forwarded e-mailfrom my mum. Here is what it said.
IMPORTANT
AUSTRALIA WILL BE HOLDING A CENSUS IN AUGUST
DO NOT LEAVE THE “RELIGION” SECTION BLANK. BE SURE TO AT LEAST TICK CHRISTIAN (OR YOUR UPBRINGING FAITH).
1,000,000 MUSLIMS WILL TICK THEIR BOX.
10,000,000 AUSTRALIANS WILL LEAVE IT BLANK THEN WONDER WHY A MOSQUE IS BUILT IN THEIR NEIGHBOURHOOD!!!
PASS THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS.
Now I am not religious but things like this really p me off!! I'm so over these judgements being made towards groups just because of lack of understanding. Not just religious groups but any type of 'minority'. Why wouldn't I want a mosque in my neighbourhood? We have a christian church around the corner, does that mean I should start complaining about that because it's not my chosen religion!?
I don't really know what I want to achieve by posting this, I just needed to get it off my chest. I think it's bothering me more than normal because it came from my mum
Eugh. Sounds like something my mother would forward.
I do send back messages saying "surely one million Muslims need a mosque or two, may as well be where they tick they live!" - tempted as I am to go down the "stop the ugly racism, you hostile, intolerant expletive" that wouldn't work.
So, Muslims should tick Christian to avoid getting a mosque built? Oh wait, they are "allowed" to tick their upbringing faith. How kind of your mother to allow that option. What if you were brought up Christian but then changed to Muslim?
I hate things like that. I get them from my MIL, along with the ones claiming that Australian citizens get 1/3 of the amount of centrelink payments as an illegal immigrant. Makes my blood boil. Live and let live people!
Ugh. My dad's justification for not liking Muslims is "I'm not being racist, being Muslim's not a race" He spouted it off again tonight, it really upsets me.
Sent from my iPhone so forgive the speelung misstacks
Oh it's so frustrating! I am quite disappointed cause I didn't really think she was like that. Or I at least thought she would know I wouldn't appreciate that type of thing. I didn't really know what to say, I just wrote back "I didn't realise you were anti-muslim." I wouldn't usually say anything, I'm not one for confrontation or getting into debates but just felt like I needed to reply.
Ugh, how disrespectful and intolerant - good for you for saying something to your mum
I think the diversity we have is one of the beautiful things about our area - we have a mosque next door to a christian church and on the other side is a ba'hai temple
