Definitely check out the refectory, but many ppl will bring their lunch so you can too, it's not daggy to bring a lil insulated lunch box with you. You can get away with anything when you're a mature age student LOL.

The students union will probably be giving out showbags or something similar - grab one - it will usually contain really "useful" stuff like free drinks vouchers for the local pub, a condom, various pamphlets on safe sex, and a list of all the activities where you can get really drunk. But more importantly it will probably have a student diary in it (or there will probably be a pile of them sitting around somewhere) and probably a list of all the services that are available to students - like counselling, loans, second hand text books etc as well as a campus map. (It may also have a choccie in it...)

MD is right - do a library tour and if they offer a tour of the computer facilities do that one too.

I always used to carry a muesli bar - it saved buying something from the shop - and it is amazing what hungry work studying is.

Also - in your lectures - make sure that by the end of the first lecture in every subject you know the contact details of the lecturer - if they don't give them ask them at the end - usually a good way is asking how they prefer to be contacted if you have a query - most will give you their email address.

And, if you are given a list of "recommended reading" go to the library right away and borrow at least a few of those books. It will give you an opportunity to see what they are like and decide if you want to buy them or not. Nothing worse than forking out a fortune and finding that you don't like a particular book. It used to be a rule that any text book that was used ina course had to have a copy on "shot loan" (usually between 2 hours and 2 days) in the library which means that you don't have to buy all the text books they want you to - just get the ones that you absolutely need or think that you will actually use.

    Most importantly - have fun
