Anyone at either ACU or Uni of QLD Studying Midwifery?

Hello all!

I rung around on Friday and it seems for me ACU will prob be the best one - all though its a fair drive! but in the end that dosent bother me - im determined this time to not let anything stand in my way of acheiving my dream!

Sara - guess what i have in my hot little hands? yep the HOMES section from the paper - just gotta send it too u now

3GirlsOnly - hmmm from my phone calls it looks like i might have to study a science (yuck) or get a dipolma as my certs arnt enough points (if u know what that means)
so and Adult Tertiary Prep thru TAFE sounds good to me - can u do a science? and can u recommend any? i hated science at school - so something thats interesting wld be needed hehehe - maybe biology or something? what do u think?

I found a nice place I might be interested in. Its in Bracken Ridge. Will that be close to you? Its $270 but thats the cheapest 3brm place I could find in range of the uni. Its only a Massionette but its nice.

Yeh spending a year preparing is a good idea. I have had 3 years to prepare! So now I am ready to just get on with it!

Oh hun! I'm sorry if i made you feel like that.

Its only taken me this long cause I've fallen pregnant twice. Separated from the girls father and go pnuemonia.

If waiting another year is what you want, wait.

Honestly, enjoy your little girl! They grow up way to quick hun. At least this time next year she will be nearly 15 months old!

In the mean time just do little bits and peices to educate yourself as much as possible. Do the prep courses. Get your First Aid Cert. All those things so that when you go to apply in August, you will be ready.

I have my first aid - i work for the Ambulance Service

But its just finding out how to do these other courses and finding time etc to do so which at the moment is looking impossible to me!
Why cant it be easy to apply and get it?

If your interested in those courses, call the TAFE closest to you.

One of the Baby Buddy mums I know did the prep courses through TAFE and is now doing her Bach of Nursing. I'll send her PM a see what she says and I will get back to you.

Why don't you wait until after you have moved? When your all settled in, start looking into the courses then. Moving is stressful stuff!

I just re-read one of your previous posts.

So they uni have said that the studies you have done so far are not enought to get you into the Mid course right?

What did they say about the Nursing course?

I know you don't want to do the Nursing course, and I COMPLETLY understand that, but if you could get into the Nursing course you'd be right. You could do the Nursing course for a year and then apply for a transfer into the Midwifery course after the first year.

I called ACU the other day and that was what they reccomended I do aswell. I didn't bother dribbling on about how I had already started the Nursing course 3 times in the last 3 years and that I didn't interest me in the slightest.

But you know, If its was the only way (other than waiting until the end of this year) I was going to get in, I would apply to ACU for Nursing and then transfer. I think if I had the right support, I could get through the first year no worries.

Sara, I'm in Mount Cotton, somewhere sort of between Loganholme and Cleveland. Redland Bay is the area. I'm going to call the TAFE tomorrow and see what they can offer me. I thing I want to start mid year.

Rhianon - So how long would it take you to drive from your place to Uni? When I look at the maps and stuff it all looks so far in between destinations!!!

Even if I don't get into Uni....I am really considering moving down.

I went back into my QTAC application and added a couple of more preferences. I added Nursing for BOTH Uni's and I added the Dual Mid/Nursing Degree through Uni of Qld.

I figure that I can put up with Nursing for 1 year ONLY and then transfer over to Mid in the 2nd year.

I am keeping everything crossed that I just get into the Midwifery course though!

I've also been doing some researching the last couple of days and I honestly think that the Uni of Qld Mid course is better than the ACU Mid course.

The ACU course starts of just like a Nursing course really.

Well im pretty much on the verge of yet again giving up on another dream - seems like im not meant to live out my dreams!
I rung up to enquire about WIST etc than rung UQ to see if they will accept courses done thru WIST and they wont!
Havent rung ACU yet!
Looks like if i really want to do midwifery than i might have to do nursing than midwifery!!!!! why oh why do things have to be hard to get into!!! why oh why did i just not go straight from school into uni? why oh why did i get a job first, buy a house, get married, have a bub, than think about me and my dream career???????

If you get into nursing and get good marks then you can try to get into mid the next year. The first year of nursing is the same as the first year of mid. All the mid courses will have the nursing components as as much as people don't like to think that midwifery is nothing like nursing, it is. You still need the basics. And, between you and me, the Midwives out there don't really like/agree with some of the direct entry midwifery programs. They are finding these new grads come through and don't know enough about the nursing skills to be competant in the whole role of a midwife. And, doing nursing first opens up so many more doors for your career... Maternity and child health, NICU, women's health (I did my first nursing prac in the gynaecology ward and loved it!! I decided that women's health is what I want to do with my nursing side of the degree)

Sara, Bracken Ridge is nice. Just a little note, the northside is pretty bad for childcare vacancies. I would be putting the horse before the cart and finding that in the area that you like before a house. If you are going to go to UQ, I would loook for a place closest to the hospital where you will be based at, as you will be there 3 days a week (RBWH, Ipswich or Mater). Look up Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au for their rentals.
