Hi PP - yep, I did B Comms with a journalism major.

I enjoyed it but halfway through realized I hated interviewing people. Not the best omen!

I freelanced for a bit but it was pretty cut throat and only a few in my course got jobs as reporters.

I ended up in government PR and love it. The journalism side of my course helped as I do loads of media and issues management.

There are tons of opportunities with comms and it can be shaped for any industry/field. You just have to find subject matter that appeals to you.

    Yep.

And I worked as a journo for a number of years.

If you love writing, forget journalism. The first thing one of my lecturers said is that good journalism is nothing to do with writing. It's about an insatiable need to find out the facts. Most journalists are mediocre writers at best.

My DH is teaching in this area at the moment. Every time I go to his office I am absolutely tempted to study the same.

So I'm no real help, just lurking

Have you looked at the courses in each comms stream to see what appeals? Maybe get a curriculum outline?

I did professional writing as a course, and part of that was classes in non-fiction writing, screen writing, and editing. Could be an option just to take those? It has certainly helped me in all aspects of writing, not just the fiction side of things.
