Wanting to study midwifery but unsure of avenues - HELP!

Ive always wanted to be a midwife but unfortunately never got the chance to go to Uni straight out of highschool. Ive decided now is the time to look into doing it but I have no idea where to start. I was hoping to do an external midwifery degree to start off with as a) my kids are still very young and Im not willing to put them in fulltime daycare yet and b) my husband is in the military so it might be a bit more flexible with the moving aspects.

So I guess Im just asking for any advice from anyone about midwifery degree's, external/distance study and anything to do with Townsville Uni's (as thats where we are heading in July).

Try this site....About The Good Guides | The Good Guides Click on courses on the left...highlight nursing (as mid is under that category) you may have to highlight all states to get who offers external.

It will tell you what course is offered where!!

AFAIK the only external midwifery course is at UniSA but check the list anyway.

Direct entry mid can also be very hard to get into.

Hi AnnaT. I've looked into external BMid also. UniSA does it but you need a TER of about 94 to get in, because of the high demand for that course. You also have to go to SA twice a year for lab work before doing placements at a hospital.

Might be worth applying to the local uni's in VIC? I know of someone who is doing the bachelor of Midwifery part-time through ACU in Melbourne. She even takes her new baby along to uni with her apparently.

Best thing to do is look at where you want to study- who is offering the course, then contact the faculty and ask about entrance pathways. They may offer bridging courses at the same university that garuntee you a place in a degree course. If not then they can advise you of universities who do run pathways type courses.
