That's exactly it Westy. It also says why giving baby pureed food isn't teaching them to "eat" properly as the puree is just going to the back of their tongues and they are sucking and swallowing as they would if they were taking milk from breast or bottle.

LOL, yeah, that's my thinking too. It's also so much more convenient as baby eats basically what you eat so there is no need to prepare purees to take out etc.

mummasue re porridge. We didn't bother with a spoon at first. We just put a bit on his tray and he played with it and had a great time. I think he got some in! I am sure you know already from reading the book that in the first days it is mainly play and learning about texture etc. it took DS a month or so before i could be certain he had actually eaten anything at all. it took ages for him to do a solid poo and he still doesn't do many. He is so independent though unlike most of his puree fed peers! 0
westy - when they show the 3 signs they are considered ready. That is sitting up with no support at all, are able to pick things up and put then in their mouth and are showing an interest. This is usually at 6 months but could be later. they need to be showing all 3 signs.

Westy, I'm not 100% sure what we'll start with, I need to read further!

Poppyfairy, thanks for the advice on the porridge, I never thought of doing it that way - but also reading the book further, they are saying the same.

I can't wait to get started!!

think we are going to start with broccoli trees (cos easy to grab) and pumpkin.

also getting dried bananas and apples and other fruits from a mate who makes them herself from her own organic fruit but i want to start with vegies first.

We went on a picnic yesterday and it was so nice to give DD a few fingers of food - we all watched her and didn't really focus on our lunch! Her Nan & Pop are a little nervous about such an approach but they did well. We find she loves watermelon and orange - she will happily suck on a wedge of orange (skin on) for ages.

I also have just received my Baby led Weaning book. I bought it off ebay from a private seller. It's quite a bit smaller than I expected and has 'Not for Resale' printed on the back of the book. Does anybody else's book have this?? I'm just wondering if perhaps my book is a scaled down version?? Seems a bit dodgy!!

Mooks, my copy is 256 pages long, publisher is Vermillion, cost 10.99 UK pounds. It doesn't have "not for resale" on the back at all. Some books that have that are ones that came in a pack if that makes sense.
    Does that help at all?

Ok I am so intrigued and interested in this! Got a couple of months to do the research.......interesting about those 3 things though. I can't imagine DD will be sitting unassisted in 2 months but I guess it's a steep developmental curve. Anyways, went onto book depository and there are 2 books that come up both by the Gill guy........one is called Baby Led Solids and the other one is called I can Feed Myself - Baby Led Solids. The latter was released 1/9/10. Do you think it's just the updated edition?
