Is it ok to leave the skins on foods (those that you can eat the skin)? Like zucchini and cucumber and all those sorts?

Hey, just a quick question. Ashlyn is loving food, but her want seems to be out doing her ability and things just ended in tears. She is perfectly happy with something in her hand or mouth but cries the second she drops it or it falls out. Is there anything I can do or should I just let her go until she gets the hang of it? Also is yogurt ok? She absolutely lunged at my spoon earlier and I wasn't sure if I should let her have it. Ta

captain - (bear with me here as i have NO solids experience as yet) Personally i would stick with it and just mayb help her pick it up again. Im sure she will get the hang of it. Someone suggested earlier that if you leave the skin on fruits and things, it helps them get a better grip.. so mayb try that? I dont see why she cant have yogurt. The way I see BLS, what ever u are having, she can have.. minus.. coffee.. chocolate.. lollies etc lol

As far as I know, yoghurt is fine. In fact, my LO absolutely adores yoghurt- and its pretty much the only thing he likes! There are baby yoghurts which I've been buying for him, but from what I hear, they really aren't that different to adult yoghurts....

I gave Ashton yogurt yesterday, just ended up all down the front of him, I don't think he actually swallowed much.

Ashton sometimes cracks it when he drops something. He is just so eager to eat what he's holding that when it slips he bursts into tears. I usually just pick it up and hand it back and it goes straight back in the mouth.

I went and saw the health nurse today. I mentioned he started solids and she asked "farex?" and I said no BLS and explained to her, she pulled out her stupid book and was saying how I should be giving him farex, f&v only blah blah. I just told her, 3rd time around I am not stupid and to google it haha (in a nice way ) She was interested then and said she would have a look later.

I have to stay away from yoghurts - Miss M is on soy formula - so no dairy for her!!!

We leave the skin on stuff here - and she just gums the fruit away from the skin - and leaves the skin behind.

Haven't tried anything new for a while - DS gave her one of his chicken chippies that he got for dinner tonight (as in, the meat chicken in tempura batter cooked in the oven as opposed to chicken flavoured potato chips) she ate that too.

And she seems to like milk arrowroot biscuits too. Ahh the joys of having a toddler who shares everything when mummy's back is turned. And once she has it - you can't get it off her.. she hangs on for grim death to the damn thing.

Arrowroots! How I rue the day I ever gave one to DS. He gets so excited about them he shakes and you're right, you can't take it off him. I try not to give them often, but he just LOOOOOVES them when I do.

But oh, the mess! Yesterday I gave him one and later in his bath I found arrowroot between his toes! The mind boggles.

I'm another one who's lurking... read back a few pages - loved the arrowroot between the toes tehehe.

Further to SamiH's question re allergies. We've got intolerances in our family - does the same thing apply as allergies?? Not before 12 months? Heaven forbid if so...!!! And I guess we'd just introduce one thing at a time... bit boring but still BLS I guess. Plus, he's already got eczema anyways... ... so I'm probably gonna be paranoidly careful.

I've just read this entire thread *phew* - took me about 40 minutes!

Our solids journey is slightly complicated by our bub having a cleft palate. He can't have chunks until after his cleft is repaired (on 2nd March) - and he has healed.

However, I'm starting my learning now as this is precisely what I want him to do - once he can. He's having purees now (yoghurt, apple, custardy-things, etc) but I can tell that they bore him. We once let him at a blackcurrant & apple jelly thing. Made a lovely mess - but he had an absolute ball! Can't wait to start proper finger-food.

We're hoping it will make us eat a little more healthily as we will let him share our plates (to some extent)...

Hope you don't mind me joining. I'm astounded by how many bubs are around my DS's age in here - and I haven't met some of you before!!

Yoghurt is fine, i give natural yoghurt with some apple puree (apple sauce made for roasts) or with some fruit in it or a tiny bit of jam.

For those that are giving biscuits, have you tried a Sao? MJ loves these and they have no sugar...

Belfie - the information that i have would say to slowly introdue... but with everything, do what you are comfortable with. DSS has ezcema and it is made worse with tomatoes, pinapple and other acidic foods, Mj has been given these, but in small amounts and only in a combination with foods that she has already tried and had no problems with... as there was no issues with them, she can have them freely now, although she tends to like them less!

As for crying and being frustrated, it will pass, its a learning thing, pretty soon they will be picking up really smalll things like grains of rise, none of MJ's non BLS friends can do that - they are learning their fine motor skills early and its juct difficult for them atm while all the synapses and nervous pathways are forming... just keep encouraging and yeah, try and leave skin on OR cut food so there is a bit of a handle.

Mel - will you try soy yoghurt?

I read that babies that have intolerances or allergies don't tend to like or eat the culprit food. They might try it the first time but will only play with it from then on, but not stick it in their mouths.

I know this was the case with my nephew with strawberries. He ate them in the beginning but then refused them after that. He came up in a red rash all over his body. Not so long ago his Dad was kiving him toast with strawbery jam on it for breakfast which he loved (I'm sure it was the sugar!!) but the rash appeared again..... my SIL had forgotten about that intolerance, and actually hadn't figured it was an intolerance at the time, but has now put two and two together. As soon as he was stopped eating the jam it all cleared up. So now she knows why he keeps refusing to eat strawberries.

Maybe these babies are smarter than we give them credit for sometimes huh?

SJ - I would assume that we will - DS is on soy yoghurt cos we think he can't handle dairy either......

Thanks for the tip about Sao's

Well we tried our first foods today! Emily LOVED it. She had a finger of wholemeal english muffin with melted cheese on it. She did so well. Can't wait to try more!

    That's great eej! Well done!
Thanks for the tip about hommus Mel ( I'm such an idiot sometimes) we had hommus on toast for lunch today and it went down well - well, less down and more around but she seemed to like it. We had a few days of not eating so well due to illness but we are back on it now.
I have been so slack - she has only really been having one meal a day for like a month. I am going to try to get her having something 3 times a day - fruit and yoghurt for breakfast, something on toast for lunch and she can chew on some veges or a celery stick while we eat our dinner - she loves celery sticks!
    welcome lurkers and to all
