I can only think it must have been a cultural difference and supposed to be pronounced like Ah-nahl.
Perhaps, once in the Salvo's I picked up a dress for a two year old - on it there was a picture of what looked like little miss sunshine - but the text Little Miss Anal! It was a nice dress, and looked like had never been worn (perhaps a gift from someone overseas who didn't speak English?)
