You know when you're a teenager and you start thinking of names you would like to call your children one day. Well I had a name which I loved and loved and wanted to call my son one day..... I never told anyone and wouldn't you know it, one of my cousins had a baby boy one day and used MY name!
Now I never see this cousin and havent I reckon for about 8 or 9 years. I last saw her mum and dad (my aunt and uncle) at my wedding in April and probably wont see them well until there is a family funeral.....
Anyway, I am unsure as to whether to have this name and if I have a boy name him it. Would it be wrong to do so? Would I be putting noses out of joint......
What do you reckon?
Jen,
I would use the name you have picked out. Especially considering you dont see her very much. If you are worried about it enough maybe you could alter the spelling of it?
I posted the exact same thread 16 odd months ago We also have no contact with the cousin except for weddings and funerals and we live in different countries.
I used the name that my cousin had used but there have been absolutley NO negative repercussions. Just a few jokes - but nothing bad at all. No-one in our familes cares at all - if anything, it shows that we have great taste in names. My poor Oma had only 3 great grandchildren, they were all boys and TWO of them had the same name. She just calls one Big L and my son Little L.
You have to do what is right for you, your family and your child. If you feel this is the right name for you and your child then, in my experience, GO FOR IT !!
If you don't have any contact I don't see the problem, even if you did they might find it flattering that you used the same name...even though you thought of it first
If you love it go for it.
I'd say go for it
My DH absolutely loves Maddison, and my cousin has used it. We won't even hesitate using it if we have a girl again. It's the name DH has always loved.
You know your family better than anyone in here. If you feel that it may cause some angst then I would choose something else. If you don't think it will be a problem then go ahead with the name.
How is your relationship with your cousin? Is she the type of person who would say you copied her?
We have chosen a name for our little girl and I have some reservations about how my mother (of all people) will react to the name because she has mentioned once before her dislike for it (it was on our list when we had Nikita) but to hell with her opinion
We are using it because DH loves it so very much and he hasn't really had the chance to do a lot with me during this pregnancy so its his contribution iykwim.
I like the suggestion of altering the spelling a little as well so it will be the same name but different.
I say GO FOR IT! Especially if you only see them for weddings & funerals. There is always going to be someone you know with the same name. It's how the trends go. It's none of their business anyway what you pick to name your child.
If you're worried they'll say you copied just be honest and say it's a name you've loved since you were a kid but unfortunately you weren't lucky enough to get to it first and if you can live with it so can they.
I also like the idea of spelling it differently, or if you're REALLY worried about it, pick a different first name and have it as the middle name.
Good Luck!
Funny story though, when I got my furbaby, I had my heart set on calling her Jasmine. And my DSS's girlfriend TOLD me that there was no possible way I was allowed do that as she had a friend named Jasmine! I had never even met this friend of hers! I just gave her the "too bad, she's your friend not mine" speech and that was that. I did happen to meet this other Jasmine a couple of years later at a baby shower and she was giving someone else heaps about having a same name as a dog and I quickly piped up "Well guess what? My dog's name is Jasmine!" and the look on her face was priceless
i say go for it!!
my sisters name is Leah and my dads step brother also called his daughter Leah.
luckily they had different surnames but i think its fineits your baby afterall
there is always going to be "opinions" but hey as long as you and DP are happy then who cares!
good luck huni.
I would use the same name.
My cousin and i lived close and were due 3 months apart with #1.
We were the only family each other had as we lived in the sticks
Anyhow we were talking names one day and i said if i has a boy i would call him james, She said omg i was the thinking the same thing. We thought it was cool - i mean they will be 2nd cousins (and how many of your 2nd cousins do you see a lot anyhow) and they would prob think it is cool to know someone with the same name.
so neither of us cared.
She has a boy called him James and i had a girl.
but even if it was a boy they would both have the same name,
i find the whole name battle with family and friends a little silly to be honest.
It is your life - you choose what you like. i am sure your babies will meet 100 x people in their life stime with their name - esp if it is a common one.
