For DD, we wanted something to beautiful & precious. Her middle name is Jewel.
For DS, we wanted to use DP's late brother's name, but with different spelling. His middle name is Rhys.
I actually wanted DD's middle name to be Rhys, as I just love it in a unisex way, but DP insisted we save it for a boy if we had one.
This time, if its another DD, her middle name will be a particular fruit, and if its another DS, we're thinking of using a family nickname. Nothing is set in stone though.

DS1 we used Walter as all the first born males on my side had that as their middle name for at least 4 generations before (so at least 5 generations now); DS2 we used used DH's dad's name (Colin) as they had a tradition of using the father's first name as the middle name of the first male but DH's parents broke that tradition and DH didn't want his name to be the middle name so we went back to his dad's.
in a morphine induced hallucination! seriously. A lady put her hand on my shoulder and said "what about Timothy? " I told DP later.. when I could speak that I think I saw his mum and she wanted DS to have her brothers name as a middle name. We were going to name our baby after her if it was a girl so I thought it was fitting.
Maybe it wasn't a hallucination. ... but a visit from beyond! My MIL has been dead for 18 years... I never met her. or did I?
DDs first name is a bit unusual so we picked a traditional middle name to balance it out. It had to sound right in terms of number of syllables etc. And DP decided it had to start with a roman numeral so DDs initials are roman numerals- geeky much?!
basically names that I love but I think are too common to use as a first name =p one of the middles names are after a family member (started by accident but kept the theme).
( for Spock and the future girl and boy name I already have picked)
oh and all names have a strong meaning, meaningbis more important than the nane for me
