i have a friend with a CoCo and i cant say im a fan.
She was going to be Lucy which i thought would suit her a lot better, it makes me think of Coco and IceT lol
Hi All, even though our bubs isn't due until xmas, I know we will take ages to settle on a name.. Right now we are throwing around the name Coco for a girl. When DH first suggested it I thought it was ridiculous, but the more I think about it the more I like it... Our DD's name is W i l l o w so we are not traditional names sort of people. If it's a boy we are thinking Ryder. So I guess my question is:
Is Coco too out there?
If yes should we pick a more sensible first name that's still special and just call her Coco or, do we find a name that Coco can be shortened from? If so any suggestions....
But, really I would like to know how people feel about Coco as a name.

I think coco and w illow sound nice together
Remember how many other "out there" names are around at the moment
So when coco is an adult she will likely sit next to a Rain, Aurora or petal in her workplace...
Coco is pretty![]()
I have an 8yo called C o c o and I still love it all these years later. When we had it originally it caused a stir through the family but people could no imagine her any other way. I certainly do not think it is an out there name by any means, but I live in a town where her name is quite 'normal' compared to others in town.
The name never gets shortened, she has never had anyone tease her about coca cola or coco pops, nothing.... Coco Chanel is the only comparison she has had.
You can call your baby Collete and shorten it to Coco, Collette is a derivative of Nicole which comes from Nicholas.... so to find meaning for Coco look at the names I listed... it means "victory for the people' or something like that.
I think if you love it, go with it, there are many kids named Coco now so it's not so unusual!
Thanks girls. I am not worried it's too out there for myself more for others. I know once everyone gets used to it, they will get over it and she will just be coco. I didn't think W i l l o w was that unusual but a few people passed comment on what kind of a name is that. Having said that everyone loves it now. I like this name but DH did google searches and some people expressed their utter despise for it and i thought if that was the general feeling I would rethink it.
Crumpet - I was worried about that, but I think by the time she is at school or at least in the workforce that women will be long gone from our TV screens and thoughts (we can only hope anyway hahahaI prefer to think of David Arquette and Courtney Cox's daughter lol

I'm in two minds. I personally would give a longer name & shorten it. That's just me though. I also know people who have been named the short version and you wouldn't know them any other way - Tony, Alex, Max. I know Tony for one has never wished his name was really Anthony! I also know a Matilda who has never been called that in her life. She's Tilly and was always going to be Tilly even before she was born. So really she probably should have just been called Tilly on her birth certificate.
There are probably heaps more names it could be shortened from than I can think of but here are some suggestions:
Constance
Coralie
Courtney
Corinne
Colleen
Corrie
Collette
Nicola
lol yeah id go with the Courtney Cox version of CoCo too!
I really like it. If your other DD's name was Kathleen or something similarly traditional it would be a bit odd lol, but it isn't so, it isn't.
My Mum wanted to call my sister Coco but I'm C h a n e l so dad said no way!
I don't think it's an "out there" name by any means.
If you love it, go for it.
That's fantastic - thanks ladies, I feel so much better. Looking at other forums so many comments were really negative and even though it was DH's idea he started to turn off it, just when I started to love it.
Rowellen - thanks for all your ideas hun, you are always so good at suggesting names
I think I'm going to work on DH to go back to his original idea and not be freaked out by other peoples comments. Even if we called her something more conventional like Ivy and then used coco as a nickname it kind of defeats the purpose. Besides I actually hate nick names and shortened names which is why I like to pick nice names that don't need a nick name IYKWIM?
Now what does everyone think of Ryder for a boy? Again, I think it goes nicely with W i l l o w.
My friend has just named her boy (due soon) Ryder its a fantastic name
I love it!!
And again goes well with W illow
No matter what you can't please everyone
Everyone will know an annoying Ryder or think coco is weird
But they move on
Nice No.5 now your profile name makes senseyour mum sounds cool!
That's awesome. I actually didn't notice your last profile name. No.5 is a great change![]()
So true! LOL there was a Ryder at DS's kindy. If there was trouble, without a doubt he was the instigator. I think I'm a bit unique in that I can separate the name from the person in most cases. I usually like names because of the way they sound, not because they are "normal" "different" "old-fashioned" "trendy" or whatever other attribute that they have. I like the "Rye" sound so I like pretty much any name that starts with that. Ryan, Riley etc. We found it really hard to choose names because there were many that I liked that DH thought were too weird (because he didn't know anyone with that name growing up) or because he did know someone with that name growing up and couldn't separate the name from the person. He drove me nuts. He thought Cooper was too weird because it wasn't common for people our age or older. It's now in the top 10! Didn't matter
Anyway, my point is, I quite like the name Ryder because I think it sounds nice and matches well with W i l l o w.
Would you like me to make some more suggestions redgum? I have a massive list of names I like & would be happy to share ones I think you might like.
PS: I asked DH if he liked Coco (knowing full well he wouldn't lol) and his comment was "what about Icing Sugar - it's sweeter". Don't listen to him. Clearly he has no taste![]()
