I don't mind Gretchen but it sounds and looks a bit harsh for me.

That's exactly why DH doesn't like it.

I can't decide. I love them both although I'd probably lean more towards Gretchen because Imogen is quite popular atm.

I'll vote Gretchen lol.

And that's why I prefer Gretchen.

could you just use Lilly has a middle name - still after your mum, just not as obvious.

Imogen was on our list for a while.

Re middle names, make a deal and let DH "win" on the first name, in return you get to choose the second name

. Then go ahead and choose one of your mum's names or a name based on a word that evokes her memory in some way.
