Are these names too similar?

I really like the name Eliana as it seems to suit our surname really well. However our 1 year old niece is Ariana. Even though she has a different surname, I'm worried that the first names are too similar. We see her a few times during the year.
So,
are the names too similar?
would you be miffed if your SIL named their child something similar to your child?
would you expect to be consulted beforehand?

I would say yes. My nephew is Ryley, and we wanted Rylah for a girl and dcided against it due to this reason.

My other nephew is Jayden, and we ruled out all names that rhymed with his, which is unfortunate as we loved heaps!!

SO many people tell me to just name our kids whatever we like. At the end of the day, their names ARe different, and so are their surnames, but it is up to your personal choice about how YOU would feel about it, not everyone else.

At a guess they will probably both be shortened anyway so I don't really see it as a huge issue.

I did know cousins who were both only weeks apart and were Christof and Christopher. That got a bit confusing but I wouldn't have any dramas with what you are proposing.

If your SiL gets a bit shirty ask if she would also rule out Georgiana, Mariana and anything else that sounds similar. I think that they are different enough.

They're similar - but they aren't the same - so I wouldn't let it bother me.

And if my SIL wanted to name a child something similar to mine - and I knew it was because she loved the names I had chosen - I would be so very honoured!!

I'd probably just tell (not ask because you don't need permission) her that this is the name you are going to be using.

I would use it if you dont see them very often. I know that my DH wouldnt agree as we couldnt even use names of people he works with!!!!!!!!!!

But only if you and DH are 100% comfortable with it.

Thats the name i have choosen for a middle name if my next bub is a girl.
It is so beautiful, and i say go for it, if that is the name that you want.
And you said you only see them a few times a year....

Thanks for your feedback. I think it is a case of seeing if the name suits and going from there. It is harder finding names than I thought!!

My aunties are 'Michaela' and 'Michele' and their sister (my Mum) called her son 'Michael'!

Anyway... I personally couldn't do it. My niece is 'Milli' and I love the names 'Molly' and 'Maisie' but could never use them because of my nieces name, for what it is worth, my SIL would not have a problem with me using these names.

I agree that it may be something to discuss with your SIL she may mind she may not, you will never know though unless you ask

I would say YES it seems similar ... yet to look at the spelling of the names they look so different

I would stick with it .. I must say ELIANA is a very pretty name (my daughter's middle name is Ariane)

I would be inclined to use it.
If youa re worried though just ask SIL and see what she says.
They are still quite different, and presumably your DD will often be shortened by family to Ellie anyway? So perhaps there wouldnt be any confusion amongst the family.

Love the name too...though maybe you could consider Eleena, similar, but more different

Personally, if it were me I'd probably try to go for a name that I liked equally but that was a little more different. Having said that- if you just cannot seem to get that particular name out of your mind, and like it more than any alternatives, than just go for it. So, both names end in 'iana'- but many other names have the same ending. Would your SIL even notice if she called her daughter Hailey and you called your daughter Ashley? I doubt it.

Perhaps you can play around with Eliana- how about Elyana? Or:
