See I get around the unusual spelling by picking weird names in general

I do believe in some circumstances it can go too far when things are spelt out of control but I don't have problem with a few letter substitutions to make it a bit different.

Don't they say Imogen originated from a misspelling? Guess those of us who use it are a bit screwed either way then

From what I read it was a misprint in a Shakespearean play, it was meant to be Innogen or something like that.

Like names ending in ea - is that an "eee" sound or an "ear" sound: Bailea I figure is probably the eee sound but Lea would be - which one actually, Lee or Lear?

When i made the change is Bailea s name, besides being for numerilogical reasons, it was also because i thought it looked more feminine, and i thought that most boys had the spelling Bailey.
Her name has the ee sound, but i get people asking of its Bai leah. as they see lea as being leah.

I didn't want DS to have to spell his name so all the names we picked were fairly straightforward (as well as having other meanings for us)- I thought Peter would be an easy one for him, and it probably will be- for him, but not for me. I can't tell you how many times this past year people I have said his name over the phone and the paperwork comes back saying "Peta"!!

I have a friend who works at a dental surgery and she and the other staff keep a book of unusual names. The winner last year was Kerosene (pronounced Kirossony)

Maz your ears must have been burning this past weekend as i was telling my Mum about your children's names & that i especially liked the spelling of Vyolett & Wilhelm ... and my Mum instantly said " Oh, that's the proper German spelling of them, That's WONDERFUL " ... hence my Mum should know as her Dad was German

Kerry, I've heard of a "fem-arley"... spelt "Female". I think that won a Dr's surgery sweepstake on "strange name of the year".

Yes, there's some really unusual names out there (I teach out west and we see quite a few). The mother of Kerosene told my friend that she'd seen the word Kerosene on a sign when they were driving somewhere and she'd really liked it. My favourite from teaching is a boy named Sham (his surname is Payne).

I can't take credit for putting that "y" in Jayne - its my middle name - so my mum must have been just as weird as me!! LOL

I have a really simple first name: Emma and I still have had it spelt Ema, Ma and Emer lol

I have always had to spell my name and I don't mind. The spelling of my name is the original biblical spelling. In 1975 my name was one of the most popular names and hence I ended up with 3 other Rebecca's in my class. I liked that I was always referred to as Rebekah with a K!!!

Now speaking for all the people out there who cant spell to save them selves like me....

I ALWAYS ask people how they spell their names... even if it seems simple to you for someone like me its not... I would have no idea on how to spell most things, so wouldn't you like me to ask you how its spelt rather than having your name spelt wrong.. Oh and BTW if someone does ask you how to spell your name even though you may think its really simple please please say it slowly, as chances are they are all ready flusted about having to ask and feel like a idiot so if you say it too fast they wont get it and if they are anything like me too imbarrased to have to ask you to say it again...

As for my name I have always had to spell it out and it never bothers me... I now will say my name and then spell it out straight away even my last name as some people will try to put a E in it when we dont have one....

Like I have said I love having a differnt name, I LOVED been the only one in a class my whole school life... even now if I hear someone with my name I get a little annoyed that they have it ... I LOVE two of my sisters names and have never heard them anywhere else but on my sisters... So I hope that with the winkies, I dreamted Zaydens name when I was 15 and always Knew that my first born son would have that name... its just a shame that when I did have my first son Jayden, Aiden, and Baiden became so very popular... But you cant have eveything I guess.... I still havent heard another Mayleaka or kailaia but I have heard names that are very close....

lol, when i choose Hunters name (he is 6), there wasnt another another hunter out there, so i thought it was unique and his name came to me in a dream, it was after watching the movie, perfect storm, with cyclone grace and cyclone hunter, anyway, my family was like o thats such an american name, now there are Hunters everywhere, its not so unique anymore, and when we here of another hunter that is younger than mine, my mum says, we had it first!!
My Hunter is the only one in his class and he loves it.

When I was named my name was relatively obscure but when I was about 15 it started to get more popular and when I was 20 it was the most common name for baby girls.
It was kind of good not having to spell my name or tell people how to pronounce it anymore but it was also a bit weird to suddenly start hearing my name in public. I used to get a big fright when I heard mothers getting angry at their daughters with my name - it always took me a few seconds to realise that the angry woman wasn't yelling at me lol.
My sister's name got really popular in the 80's when she was in her teens.

my name still isnt all that popular ( well it is in Russia ) but my nic name that I use all the time Tali is becoming so well Talia is so I too find it a bit odd when I hear a mum telling off there young one, or screaming after one ...

The only thing I regret about my name is that as it is very popular in Russia people who are Russian think that I must be and therefore speak the Russian to me... it is a shame that my mother never did get my russian aunty to teach us any, it would be nice to be able to at least answer them back... even if it was only to say " No I am not Russian" maybe I should go to school just to learn that..

Lol, thats like me. I never heard of another Skye til I was 12. Met the first at 14, had one come into my school at 15. I was a bit put out by that one, but she wasn't there long, lol.
Then I changed to a bigger high school & there were, like, 5 in the school...3 in my grade!

I like the good old fashioned names, not a fan of weird spelling and made up or 'strange' names at all. I think in a few years they will look really silly, but then again, maybe as the yeas go on names will just get stranger and stranger and the old fashioned names will look silly...
