I have always had to spell my name and I don't mind. The spelling of my name is the original biblical spelling. In 1975 my name was one of the most popular names and hence I ended up with 3 other Rebecca's in my class. I liked that I was always referred to as Rebekah with a K!!!

Now speaking for all the people out there who cant spell to save them selves like me....
I ALWAYS ask people how they spell their names... even if it seems simple to you for someone like me its not... I would have no idea on how to spell most things, so wouldn't you like me to ask you how its spelt rather than having your name spelt wrong.. Oh and BTW if someone does ask you how to spell your name even though you may think its really simple please please say it slowly, as chances are they are all ready flusted about having to ask and feel like a idiot so if you say it too fast they wont get it and if they are anything like me too imbarrased to have to ask you to say it again...
As for my name I have always had to spell it out and it never bothers me... I now will say my name and then spell it out straight away even my last name as some people will try to put a E in it when we dont have one....
Like I have said I love having a differnt name, I LOVED been the only one in a class my whole school life... even now if I hear someone with my name I get a little annoyed that they have it... I LOVE two of my sisters names and have never heard them anywhere else but on my sisters... So I hope that with the winkies, I dreamted Zaydens name when I was 15 and always Knew that my first born son would have that name... its just a shame that when I did have my first son Jayden, Aiden, and Baiden became so very popular... But you cant have eveything I guess.... I still havent heard another Mayleaka or kailaia but I have heard names that are very close....

lol, when i choose Hunters name (he is 6), there wasnt another another hunter out there, so i thought it was unique and his name came to me in a dream, it was after watching the movie, perfect storm, with cyclone grace and cyclone hunter, anyway, my family was like o thats such an american name, now there are Hunters everywhere, its not so unique anymore, and when we here of another hunter that is younger than mine, my mum says, we had it first!!I LOVED been the only one in a class my whole school life... even now if I hear someone with my name I get a little annoyed that they have it

When I was named my name was relatively obscure but when I was about 15 it started to get more popular and when I was 20 it was the most common name for baby girls.
It was kind of good not having to spell my name or tell people how to pronounce it anymore but it was also a bit weird to suddenly start hearing my name in public. I used to get a big fright when I heard mothers getting angry at their daughters with my name - it always took me a few seconds to realise that the angry woman wasn't yelling at me lol.
My sister's name got really popular in the 80's when she was in her teens.

my name still isnt all that popular ( well it is in Russia ) but my nic name that I use all the time Tali is becoming so well Talia is so I too find it a bit odd when I hear a mum telling off there young one, or screaming after one...
The only thing I regret about my name is that as it is very popular in Russia people who are Russian think that I must be and therefore speak the Russian to me... it is a shame that my mother never did get my russian aunty to teach us any, it would be nice to be able to at least answer them back... even if it was only to say " No I am not Russian"

My girls have Polish names and thankfully they are being brought up bilingual, so hopefully they will appreciate their skill in years to come.

Oh, Oh, Oh, I just remembered something. I read that Oprah Winfrey was actually supposed to be called Orpah (which is a bible name from the book of Ruth), but her mum spelled it wrong on the birth certificate and the pronunciation stuck!!!! I wonder if she'd be as famous if she was called Orpah??
Hmmm, I can't remember who was saying their name wasn't spelled right and it might be there mother, too many posts I've read . . Maybe it was the registry's fault. My DH's birthdate is wrong on his birth certificate, only by 1 day (as he says, hey I got to drink beer a day early) but his Mum SWEARS she wrote it down and the nurses signed off on the correct date, but it came back officially incorrect. I wonder if that happens with names?

Maz! - My Opa's name was Wilhelm - and despite the fact that nobody ever saw him spell it, and he pronounced it to them repeatedly correctly, most people still called him Will-em instead of Vil-Hell-m. Does your son go by the traditional German pronunciation or just the spelling (just out of curiosity)

Lol, thats like me. I never heard of another Skye til I was 12. Met the first at 14, had one come into my school at 15. I was a bit put out by that one, but she wasn't there long, lol.
Then I changed to a bigger high school & there were, like, 5 in the school...3 in my grade!

We were the same when we named our DS Xander. It came from a discussion where DH liked Xavier but the male family names were Robert (Bob) - DH and Dh's father or Alexander. So somehow we came to Xander - basically a shortened form of Alexander although his registered name is Xander not Alexander which a lot of people call him -assuming Xander is a nickname. Just after we came up with the name we saw the movie XXX with Vin DisealNow I have met a few Xanders or Zanders but I still feel as if we were the first
Ariya - Dh and I found in a book that we both loved and her name was either going to be Ariya or Linnea (pronounced lyn na ah) but it needs one of those dashes (omlout???) and I can never work out how to put them in on a computer :-) Ariya's name is actually spelt Arya which is a traditional Indian name but we figured in OZ she would get called Are-ya so we changed the spelling to make the pronounciation a little more straight forward. We figured we couldn't have a Xander and an ordinary name.

Lady ZaidieI never took any offence to anything you said. It's more the people saying I'm trying to make myself out to be better than I am (or my DD is) by changing the spelling of a name. I don't think that is fair at all.

We have called our kids a name WE ARE COMFORTABLE WITH. There is no need to judge anyone, make comment on the way we live socially, how we view the world.....as long as that child is feed, dressed, hugged and made to feel special from YOU is all that counts.
You cant go making judgement on a child or person by the way they express themselves in life and you sure as hell cant blame their name for the person they are or will be in the future. You should except the child/person for the person they are!

Girls, you can't just let your little ones off lapdancing on their own.
Let old weirdy name here take them the first few times to make sure they're OK.
BTW, my least favourite comment is "so why do you spell it like that?" You mean I got a choice? I came out the womb screaming "give me a freaky deaky name!"? OK so NOW it's my choice but it wasn't when rude people asked that question.

but then think about some ppl dont like names coz their normal coz their boring say James like i named my son ppl always say why such a boring name but i chose it for my stepdads best friend who sadly passed a few years ago and having a friend who said she 'saw' him watching over me convinced me even more even more freaky they both had the same birthweight also a maori middle name kai for my nz heritage and george for DH's grandad that passed away when he was 16

Im a bit of a fence sitter with this one.
I used to go out with a guy who had an extremley common name in our era but spelt differently, it made his name seem different all together and there was never any confusion on the others always had to go by the first name and first inital of their surname.
The girls name i have always wanted was primarily a boys name and so i changed the spelling to suit a girl. (not that i had a girl so never used the name lol)
But in saying that i think some traditional names can get out of control with changing of spelling.
