Oooo very nice. For a wrap that hasn't been really worn/broken in it's very light and easy to wrap with. Size 3 is perfect for a back ruck, I just have to practice it a bit more. I'm just worried I'll get the beautiful cream colour dirty! What do you think of wool, MadB?
I'm going to try the rebozo hip carry tomorrow, I know I have to pop into the shops quickly in the morning.
I have never tried wool, which is why I was asking.

Hey ladies! I'm only just starting baby wearing now. My DD is nearly 5 months old (only 2 months adjusted, she was an ex 29 weeker)
I have brought a sleepy wrap and she is only just getting used to it now. Although 20 minutes first time in it and she was asleep. The second time it was used, she was asleep in a matter of 10 minutes.
Can you suggest any other wraps/slings/carriers that have good weight distribution (i have severe back issues) and are suitable for Prems as well as full term bubs and something that is really going to last!

It's much lighter than I expected. I imagine it would be great in warmer weather. Certainly won't require much breaking in. I'll show Epacris tomorrow if she comes to lunch and she can give you a more expert opinion. As far as I can compare, it ties much more easily than my Oscha (which isn't broken in) and my less cushy cottons, but not as easily as my Paisley.:

I'd have a try of a manduca if you're after an SSC - they zip down so the body of the carrier can be smaller or larger depending on size of baby. Otherwise Alex and I love the Beco (we have the Butterfly 2).
A woven wrap can be used longer than a stretchy one. same principle, more or less, but you can use it as a hip or back carry as well as on the front. Depending on how you wrap it, the weight distribution is excellent and it is most adjustable of all your options.
And i fyou have a little one, you could try a bamboo or silk blend for ultra comfort and softness :) (they're less supportive over 10kg or so)

I'd really love a ring sling but have no idea what is quick and easy.
The way we want to start trying this babywearing is I wear DD instead of using the pram in the shops or out and about. At home I won't use it as often because she's generally well behaved and doesn't need to be held. Sometimes she actually screams to be put down! Haha.

SSC = soft structured carrier. Easy to use and adjust as they have buckles and padded shoulder straps so quite good for a dodgy back.
I'm still looking for a good ring sling, though I like the look of the Maya lightly padded. Might bite the bullet and get one, I have a friend's wedding to go to in a few weeks and my beco won't suit what I'm planning on wearing.
Also there's a Perth Baby Wearers facebook group you can join - the lovely ladies there have loads of good advice and there's regular meet ups where you can try stuff on
I know they're not pretty, but my breeze baby ring sling is actually the easiest to use of mine. I have a pretty Rockin' Baby I also like, but the rails (top and bottom bits of the sling) are super easy to adjust on the breeze because the fabric is so light. It also comes with instructions on different carries. At your baby's size, Lys, the heart to heart is comfy and quick.
Bwing is much easier than prams at the shops!
What about the pocket or ring slings? Are they any good? I'm going to have a squiz at a local baby shop. Any hints for buying a sling?
And yes, prams can be evil. They hurt more than carrying her in the sleepy wrap! And she's hit over 5kilos now!

A word of caution - I find the Breeze very diggy on the shoulder and uncomfortable after quite a short period. I keep it mainly for the pools now.
if you get a ring sling, get an open-tailed one. They are fully adjustable - which is easier to use for safety and secuirty. The ones with padded rails are not fully adjustable and are really somewhat adjustable pouch slings. True pouch slings can be ok, if you get the correct size - this is very important. The vendor should be able to help you get the size right. With a little prem, I'd be very wary of the pouches, as it will be extra tricky to get safe positioning, I think.

I agree abouty the breeze baby sling - can be diggy on the shoulder. although with a 5kg baby it's probably ok. is the rockin baby one a padding rail one?
Oh dear. I just brought a bubba Moe sling.
I'm still saving up for a really good ring sling when I get the hang of these.
Within 3 minutes of being in bubba Moe pouch sling, missy was asleep. I'm at my mums so put her down. And she's still asleep! Oh thank goodness for a relatively quick sling.

I tried one of those Ryco ones, and stopped when a good friend told me they can actually do more harm than good. How are these different to the baby Bjorn carriers?

are the ryco ones thet cheaper version of bjorn? they don't look very secure for little babies - tend to flop around in there - and very narrow crotch, so legs hang down and lots of pressure on the spine and not good for the hips. and they hang off your shoulders, so as your baby gets heavier, it's pretty uncomfortable. bjorns have the same issues, though I think there's a model with a waist strap as well, that might be a bit more comfy? i think the main problem with bjorns are that they're really overpriced for somethign that isn't comfortable to wear for long - in contrast, a manduca, for eg, will adjust to fit from 3.5kg to 18kg (?), front or back, and carries baby/toddler in a more ergonomic position.
well, if she likes the sling and it's comfy for you, then it's probably ok :) How did you have her in it? cradle?
If you look on the fb page, there are 2nd-hand slings - they're often not all that expensive. There is also a sling library in perth - you pay $20 for a year's membership and and try a range of things. the woman who runs it is very nice & helpful. Not sure if there's an additional fee per carrier you try? It's called carried away if you want to search for it.
Jumping in, I've mostly used SSC but now i really want to try a wrap.
I have no idea on what i want but they look so comfy.

Well, for wraps, I'd recommend starting with something 100% cotton - as tends to be cheaper - and in a colour that you like the look of. What size are you? Trying some first is always a good way to go.
Jen - I was thinking of another one. What is the sling made of? it looks kinda stiff?
I currently have an ergo sport and a beco butterfly 2 plus the breeze baby ring sling. Thinking about getting a nicer ring sling as they're so handy to have tucked in the bag for quick trips into the shops or school pickup when you don't want to lug the pram out of the car. My ergo is currently being neglected in favour of the beco at present mind you.
I'd definitely second the suggestion of contacting Katherine at Carried Away though - she's lovely and has a massive library. Otherwise there's a meet at Esplanade Park tomorrow morning in Freo too.
The Rocking' Baby? 'll have to look! It is more comfy than the breeze, not diggy, spreads wide across the shoulder. Just found the breeze a good beginner sling with a small baby. For me, the RS is only ever for a relatively quick trip, if it's long I take a wrap. And now I've mastered the slip knot I'm just as likely to use a short wrap instead.:
JJ was the bomb at the show today. Used three different carries with it (sz 4 really is great for me) and got lots of comments. It meant I hardly had to worry about DD2, she fed and was changed a few times but other than that she happily passed the seven hours we were either there or on the bus snuggled in front or perched on my back in a DH.
Venturing in for a little bit of help! Hoping someone can shed some light on the differences between the Ergo and Manduca?
I'm looking for a carrier that can do a front/back/hip option, for now but also for when traveling later this year.
Ds is 1, and will be 16/17months when we are traveling.
Any pros or cons for either of these?

Manducca can do a couple of things that the Ergo cannot (or at least the older Ergos couldn't do - cross over straps at the back for one), but the two have similar structure. Manducca was apparently designed by someone originally from Ergo.
I'd try both and see which you prefer - the meet might be a good opportunity.
Wheee, just picked up a second hand girasol ring sling :) Though I've started getting the "another carrier? Haven't you got enough?" already from DH. I've only got 4 now, and one of those I hardly use because it's uncomfortable.
Had fun today wandering through the Freo Markets with DS in the ergo. Must say, the ergo backpack is so handy, comfortable to wear either with the backpack straps or hooked onto the carrier straps and so roomy - I can fit loads into it.

Spent the afternoon at a bwing meet and master class. So many beautiful wraps and carriers! So funny to walk in and ppl knew my wrap and not my name.
In comparison to most of the other stetchies i really like Moby, its a double knit rather than single and a fair bit wider.
Is the Moby cooler than the Hug-a-bub? I had a HAB with DD1 but barely used it as it was too hot with a summer bub. Then again, now that I've found the woven love I don't think I'd want to go back to a stretchy.
I got a size 4 the other day and I love it. Am I mad that, as I'm still fairly new to wrapping, I love Oscha 100% linens? I also think I might be the only babywearer to not like girasols. I'm thinking of selling the one I've got even though I absolutely love the colourway.
Couldn't really say - I'm yet to try wrapping. Not sure I'm really interested in it, I kind of like being able to just pop DS in and out without a whole lot of fabric to deal with :) Though the second hand girasol ring sling I bought arrived and we took it shopping yesterday - sooo nice and soft, plus nowhere near as diggy as the breeze.
We're off to a meet this morning hopefully (Monkeyboy slept through the last one) and I want to see if I can pick up some tips for back carrying in my SSCs

Just saw this! That's awesome! I like a 4, but my dream come true is a 3 and a half. 3s are a fradge too short, 4s a little too long.:
For travelling, sahbear, I'd pick a half buckle over a SSC if you ever have to carry any luggage. If I am carrying my backpack, my MT straps sit just nicely under it. The Ergo straps are too padded. Not sure about a Manduca.

We have a car Ergo and a house Ergo, and the wrap travels between the two! I think I need another wrap, so I can have a designated car one. I have a size 5 Didy, but I am waiting until DS is a little older before I buy a shorter one.

I'm not a huge fan of giras :) They look great. I think maybe better for rucking rather than multi-layer carries - for me anyway. I just can't get the passes right unless it's thin and slippy. It's probably me, though :)
Yes, everyone needs more than one wrap. I was trying to stay in single digits, but.... oh well.
I'm now worried the wearing may be exacerbating DD's hypermobility in her hips. Trying to get some more info before seeing physio again next week. She's suggested reducing time in the 'sling' (aka beetlebums half-buckle that she saw me using). Have to see exactly what the issue is and and figure it out. Have to find a way to do it that's ok, because i *can't* carry her in my arms all the time.

MadB - Glad it's not just me. At least the physio suggested reducing wearing time rather than stopping all together. How serious is hypermobility?

I thinkit's the flex of the hip outwards that's the issue. her knees are at 180 degree (or more) in the bb. Maybe it's just the SSCs, though, as it doesn't look like that in the wrap. I think I'll try and get her to take a look when I'm there and see if it looks better when wrapping.
My DD is sitting here with her teddy wrapped in a ruck - tied in a very classy bit of black satin :)
