So, I've been a good girl and haven't bought a WCMT... Yet. I just got my C'link top-up payment and I want to try for a custom spot somewhere. Where should I look? I was thinking Maddimoo but I got my days mixed up and thought it was Tuesday today - they closed the draw last night :wall: and apparently they're only doing one more this year :o

Hi ladies,
Just dropping into ask a quick question, don't have time to read all the posts..
I'm pregnant with my first and want to purchase a wrap in the next few weeks (pretty sure I want a wrap over a sling)
I'm pretty short (about 5.3) and pre-pregnancy a size 10.
Any suggestions? I don't even know where to start!
P.s I need one for everyday use- I plan on baby wearing as much as LO will let me :)
Thanks in advance!

I started with a sleepy wrap (stretchy wrap) and that was awesome for my newborn. And when he was a bit older (about 6 mo) I moved him to a woven wrap.
-
I started with a woven wrap. You may be able to get away with a size 5 but most people would recommend starting with a size 6 (4.6m). There are lots of affordable brands out there now or a big second hand marketplace too. 100% cotton is hard to go past for a first wrap, or cotton bamboo blends can also be nice.
-
Rose, I would say any woven, but equally a stretchy for newborn, in a size 6 is a good place to start. There are heaps of YouTube videos that show different ways to wrap, but a front wrap cross carry is probably the easiest to start with too.
May I ask why you aren't keen on a ring sling? In my experience, a ring sling is super easy to use quickly and definitely what I reach for in those first months. A woven or stretchy is better for longer periods of wearing, but a lot of my babywearing is done in quick trips to the shops, school drop off, errands, etc.
Congrats on your pg!

I started off with a ring sling. A woven wrap seemed a bit too daunting for me, so found a cheap second hand hug a bub. Was a great intro to wrapping and was somehow less daunting for me than a woven. Now I have quite a collection. If you like the idea of wrapping, I'd probably suggest going straight for a woven. Much more versatility than a stretchy.

And Rose see if there's a babywearing meet near you. You'll be able to try out lots of wraps and carriers and many groups have demo dolls

Thanks for the suggestions ladies.
In regards to the wrap over a sling- I really don't have a reason. Lol. Just thought they might be more versatile. Don't know much about the slings, but I have watched a few YouTube vids of how to use the wraps. Maybe I'll get a sling as well and see how I go.
Do you think brands matter, or are they all pretty much the same? I keep seeing the Moby wraps online, but I think that might be American?
-
Sorry I hope you dont mind if I also jump in but in regards to ring slings which brands do you recommend? In the baby shops I have looked at so far the only one they seem to stock is the breeze baby. Is this one any good? Bubs is due at the end of November meaning I will be baby wearing over the hot Perth summer so I do want something breathable.
-
I can't comment on stretchy wrap brands - I don't know much about them.
Some of the more affordable brands of woven wraps to look at are Girasol, Little Frog and Lenny Lamb.
I have a breeze baby ring and while I love it for showers and at the pool I wouldn't recommend it for everyday use. I find the shoulder very diggy and the mesh fabric tends to slip on the rings.
Most bricks and mortar baby stores have very limited ranges so you're probably better off finding a local sling meet to try things and then ordering from an online store
-
You can get ring slings that are more supportive at Mamaway, but that's the only retail shop I've seen them in. You can easily buy them online, either new or secondhand (secondhand is often better for wraps and ring slings as they're easier to use and not as stiff). For secondhand, try babywearing groups on FB (you'll have to apply to join). In Australia, the bwing buy swap sell one is good. Babywearing groups, which you can also find on FB, are good for local meets. Breeze Baby is really only good in the water.
There's bwing buy swap sell on here too, if you post a message with what you're after you'll probably get a BB member respond if they're thinking of selling.
For atretchies, I can't see there would be that much difference between the brands. You could even try making one yourself, there are instructions available online. Just be aware they are only going to work while baby is small. I used a Hug-a-bub but unlike wovens, there isn't much to differentiate it from others I've seen.
For wovens and ring slings, they will vary based on how 'broken in' they are, what they are made of, length and what kind of carries and size of baby/toddler you're wearing, as well as you!

Well, I'm going to see if I can get a Madame Googoo - anyone know what their pricing is like? She doesn't have a price list up... Failing that, Frangipani Baby have in-stock WCMTs similar to what I want anyway. Though that would involve me selling my Milky Way... What to do, what to do?!
-
Thanks for all the feedback! After looking online I just ordered a Sakura Bloom Linen ring sling. I could only find positive reviews so hopefully I have made the correct choice.
-
Went for the WCMT from Frangipani, now to wait and see if it was a good idea ;) I might wait to see before I sell my Milky Way on, I don't want to find out the mei tai was a bad idea and then start missing my first MW!
-
Em, I drool over the Sakura Bloom ring slings, but I've never got around to owning one. Let us know how you go with it. I have a lovely striped Lenny Lamb all ready for DD3. Gave it a whirl with DD2 in a hip carry the other day and think it will be perfect.
What colour did you choose?
-
Em, my very first carrier was a sakura bloom ring sling. Nothing but good things to say about it! Almost 12 months on, it still gets pulled out for quick trips to the shops or when we fly.
-
I got it in pure raven (black.) I wanted something nice and plain for my first so thought black would be a good starting point. I will def let you know how I go with it. Will have to start practising when it arrives :)
-
Im in a bit of shock at how quickly it came but it has arrived! I was so tired last night that I didnt have much of a play but will do so when I get home from work tonight- one question though the linen is very stiff (i will admit I was expecting something soft) and I would like to soften it up a bit. From what I have read the best way to soften it is to use it but I would like to soften it a bit before bubs arrives. Should I get my hands on a doll or something and wear it around the house to soften it (or will just wearing it on me without anything in it still work?) Is there anything else I can do? Sorry I'm prob going to have a lot of newbie questions in the coming weeks :)
