    Red face Toddler Stinky Wees

Ok - so the past about 4 days, DD's nappies have really stunk when I take them off. They are only full of wee & it doesn't matter how much or how little she's done in them - they still smell quite offensive. Is this an indication her diet is too acidic? or could she have an imbalance of some sort? She had a fever of 39.5 about 5 days ago that only lasted 24hrs but was just a fever and nothing else with it. She doesn't complain of being sore when she does a wee but has said on 2 occasions at bed time that she has a sore 'fanny'.

The only dietary item that has changed I guess in the last week or two, has been her yoghurt. I've changed brands and this brand has less fat than the brand we used before, but was still a low-fat yoghurt.

    Any ideas?

It could also be that she isn't drinking enough too - I notice when my kids never drank enough it made their wee smell. It could also be from the illness she had - even though it was only a fever, she could still have been ill.

Is she drinking enough water? - I'd try to increase her water intake. For the sore vagina - perhaps make sure that you change her nappy often so that it is not against her skin for long.
Only other thing I could think of is teething or UTI...
Hope that it sorts out soon

sounds like a UTI to me...best go to a dr and get her checked out. Have you ever had one??? Very painful when you we, which maybe what she is describing.

I too thought perhaps a UTI, however, Jess who is 2.4 her wee smells weird atm too and I think she is teething (back molars) and thats why it stinks. She drinks a truck load of water, so its not that.

If Hailey's not getting molars then perhaps get off to the doc to get a urine analysis for UTI.

    Good luck,
    Rachael.

Antibiotics can make the wee really stinky too.

Thanks ladies. It seems to have gone now & I just put it down to low water intake & the fact that she'd just been sick a couple of days prior. Am keeping a watchful eye on her though....so many bugs going around at the moment including whatever it is that I've got........bring back summer I say.
What is UTI? Urine infection?...not sure what the TI stands for?

Stinky smelling wee is a definite indicator of a UTI, and IMO it is probably very worthwhile getting checked out. Especially as she did have a fever the other day too.

Aidyn had one of these last year, and for a few days the only symptom I noticed was his really stinky wee. Then he got a fever and became so, so sick. So I took him straight to the Dr, and they said for it to have gotten as bad as it did, he would have had the infection for nearly a week already.... I felt terrible!

However if her wee doesn't smell anymore, and she seems fine, then probably keeping a close eye on her is fine...

    All the best!

amygirl...eden has had a high temp for the past week and her nappies smell really weird.. like a thicker, heavier smell if that makes sense.. she's had a viral infection plus she's teething big time...
So maybe its just their bodies getting rid of the yucky stuff.

thanks for your responses ladies. Don't know what it was....am thinking it might've been a UTI...she did say her 'fanny' hurt twice but because it wasn't whilst on the toilet I figured it wasn't related....but her temp was super high. Bit scary....can it damage them if you missed and didn't treat it? I've heard it can damage their kidneys or something but might be wrong?

The infection can spread back to the bladder/kidneys I believe, but I don't know how likely that is? Perhaps its best to catch a wee sample for the Dr anyway, just to be sure?

Aidyn had pain with his too - he would grab at his crotch and cry every time he needed to wee... it was awful.

ETA - forgot to add that with young children that have UTI's they usually like to send them off for a Renal (kidney) ultrasound to rule out any other issues, such as renal reflux etc.
