3 month old with a cold

My DD who is 15wks today has a cold. Is there anything I can do and should I be taking her to a doctor? Obviously because breathe through her nose still it getting hard. She has rattly breathing, very snotty nose and is coughing and sneezing because of the mucous.

Soo tell me what I need to do. I'm trying to suck the nose with that little tool from fess for little noses spray and also using a vapouriser but it seems to be getting worse.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Poor little girl

I don't know that there is any medication that can be prescribed for a little baby. Maybe have a chat to your pharmacist? They are usually pretty knowledgeable about things like that.

I hope she is feeling better soon. DD hasn't been sick yet *fingers crossed* but I am dreading when she does get sick! Hugs for your little girl, and you!

    Hi Ellee

Sorry to hear that Z is sick

Immi has had a rattly chest and cough for quite a while now. We have been to the Dr a few times about it and there is nothing he was prepared to give her at this stage/age. He said to watch her temperature and if she goes limp and unresponsive (ie not her normal self) to go to the Dr/hospital. He also recommended doing a physio treatment of laying bub face down over your knee and hitting the back gently with a cupped hand. This will help dislodge the mucos.

I know some people swear by Eucybear balm/Baby Balsom but I have never used it and not sure how old they need to be.

Of course if you are really worried go to the Dr to be certain its nothing worse.

You can try fess for little noses. It is a bottle of saline which you drip into their noses to break up the snot and then you can suck it out with the huffer that comes with it. DS hated it, but it did the trick when he had a cold at about the same age.

Good luck, it's awful when they're sick.

if you are breast feeding you could try squirt some milk into the nose and then wait a few seconds then suk it up with the fess nasel sukker thingy. thats what nurse on call told me when my little one had a cold when she was 2 and a half months.
    good luck.

Thanks all, we've kept up with the fess little noses spray and sucker thing. Also used Panadol as her temp was going up so I gave it to her when it was 37.3 degrees. She was very sooky today but has finally zonked

I would take her to a doctor.

If it's just a cold there is nothing they can do. But if it turns into an infection of some kind (chest, ear, whatever), she might need antibiotics or something (I don't know: I'm not a doctor, I just know that at that age you take them to the doctor right away if they are sick, to rule out nastier possibilities than a cold).

We took DD to a doc with a cold at the same age. There was nothing to do except use the Fess spray. Our GP said not to use the sucker thing because you can damage the delicate tissue inside their noses, just to use the saline spray. But at least we knew that she didn't have an ear infection or bronchiolitis, or something that would have required more medical care.

Also, I think you aren't supposed to use panadol except if their temperature goes up higher than that: I've been told 38.5 is the point where it is safer to give panadol than not. I suggest you ask the doctor about this.

If you are worried in the night, you can call a nurse-on-call service in your state.

    Hi Ellee,

My fave advice for things like this is... call health direct... 1800 022 222 (am I allowed to post that? sorry if it's not allowed, I'm not sure)... it's the aust govt's free health advice line with RN's, they can put your mind at ease & offer ideas that you may not have thought of before. I call them all the time, it helps, rather than trekking to hosp in the middle of the night (which is when our bubs always seem to get unwell).

Hope your little one gets better quick!
