3 year old fighting day sleep but will crash early in the evening

My son is 4 in may and he is now fighting his day sleeps I normally dont mind but by mid morning you can tell he needs sleep as he gets very difficult to deal with at times and he shows tired signs. He will last the day but will sometimes crash at 5pm and sleep right through he has a normal bedtime of 7-7;30 and wakes around 5am sometimes earlier. When he doesnt sleep he will wake earlier than 5am. Apart from taking him for a drive I have tried everything to get him to sleep he goes to creche 2 days a week and he will sleep there only for an hour a requested. At home he wont listen to me and ignores me and at times is really difficult as he will chuck a tanti every chance he can get. I am trying to cut down his sleep as he used to sleep for 2 hours or more. I think if he slept later it wouldnnt be such an issue but because he is an early riser its causing problems.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated

hmm.....well in my house, daytime sleeps at 4 have never happened!! maybe very rarely, but not often.

My almost 3 yo is similar at the moment. I find I really need to schedule quiet time, we sit together and watch some tv, or read books, something quiet and restful that isn't sleeping. This helps us get through the day. I also find when DH gets home about 4:30 he is struggling, but DH will usually play or taking him outside and he perks up again. He will crash at 7pm, this is an ideal day doesn't always work!

I'm not too sure about the early rising.......

Im not really worried if he sleeps but i think he still needs it and him getting up so early is the crux of the problem if he slept till later then he might not be as tired. He is awake now its 4:50pm so will try and keep him going
    thnaks for the advice
