    baby has diarrhea

Hi , DS(10mnths) is going thru his first lot of upset stomach, for 24 hrs he has now has diarrhea. he seems his normal self though, he does not have a temperature. At what time should you take them to see a DR, like how long should it take to pass. He has not changed his diet at all, so possibly a bug he has caught. should he go and see a DR? thanks

For me personally I have always taken them after 24-48 hours of diarrhoea. If I see any signs of dehydration, lethargy or fever I usually take them straight away.

Make sure that the food he gets is easily digested. To help him overcome it give him binding foods like boiled rice and bananas and reduce fibrous fruits and milk products. If he is on bottle feeding consider replacing with gastrolyte or something to help hydrate him. If he is breast feeding, feed him as much as you can.

Our Dr in NZ prescribed Slipper Elm powder, you can get it from the health food shops and you give them 1/2 teaspoon twice a day mixed with their food. I have found it fantastic (I always take some when we are travelling now), its great for when they are teething too. Dehydration is the big thing to watch for, try and make sure they are getting lots of fluids.

Good luck, its never fun when they are sick!

Maggie, if you feel you are coping at home and there are no signs of complications (such as lethargy, dehydration etc) there is no reason you can't stay at home. However, if you feel you are not coping, are concerned, he has signs of dehydration, or becomes lethargic - I would make a doctor appointment for as early as possible. Also, if it continues past 48 hours it is worth getting checked. Gastro type bugs can last up to 48 hours. I would keep up his fluids as much as possible to avoid dehydration and (if he is on solids) ry to restrict his intake to "bland" foods to avoid irritating the tummy lining and give him a chance to kick the bug.
