Maggie, if you feel you are coping at home and there are no signs of complications (such as lethargy, dehydration etc) there is no reason you can't stay at home. However, if you feel you are not coping, are concerned, he has signs of dehydration, or becomes lethargic - I would make a doctor appointment for as early as possible. Also, if it continues past 48 hours it is worth getting checked. Gastro type bugs can last up to 48 hours. I would keep up his fluids as much as possible to avoid dehydration and (if he is on solids) ry to restrict his intake to "bland" foods to avoid irritating the tummy lining and give him a chance to kick the bug.
