Thanks everyone for your experiences. Yes bubs room is down the end of the house and although we will have a sound and movement monitor I still don't like the idea of having Bub so far away when I'd like to breastfeed. DH wants to establish a sleep routine for day and night but as I've tried explaining to him, babies have no sleep pattern for quite a while no matter what you do lol

I suppose if he wants a good nights sleep ill have to sleep next door to the nursery and he can have bedroom.

Do what you feel most comfortable with.
For me, that was to to keep DS close to me at all times. I liked to listen/poke to make sure he was breathing He was in the bassinet for all his sleeps, unless he was in the bed with me or in my arms on the couch during the day. We had absolutely zero troubles with day/night establishment or transitioning to his cot when he was about 6 months old.
As you said, I wouldn't even think about sleep routines yet! A newborn doesn't have any bad habits, just needs that must be met.

Hammock. Better than a bassinet or a cot.

We had a nice big bassinet that Moo fitted into until he was 6 months old, we had him in our room until then. There wasn't much of an issue transitioning him into a cot in his own room after this.

I loved the bassinet and have got it out ready for this next bub. In the early weeks we'd wheel him out into whatever room I/we were in, when he got a little older he'd settle in our bedroom. It was so much easier for feeding etc and I really did miss the convenience when he moved to his own room!

You gotta do what works for you though

we had a bassinet attachment for our pram & we just wheeled him around with us till he got too big at about 3 months. then he was in his cot, in his room, for about 2 months before i gave up & started co-sleeping. my DS was a 2 hourly feeder (around the clock) for a long time & to be close to him was the only way to get a decent amount of rest.

i think you should do whatever feels right for you - but don't feel like you have to make a decision before your baby arrives. you can always wait & see what works for you depending on how you feel, baby's temprement etc.

fwiw, our DS established the difference between night & day pretty quickly - i reckon there's lots of ways you can do it - bathing them at a similar time each day, keeping the room dark at night (so even if DS was still in the loungeroom with us, we'd just have a lamp on instead of a light)...

DS is still in his bassinet in our room, though I've just started putting him in his cot in his room for day sleeps so he gets used to it. I prefer having him nearby at night because I can hear him and know he's okay - otherwise I'd be going back and forth all night checking on him. (Actually, I'd probably be camped out on the floor in his room!)

As for the day/night thing, I think it matters less where bub sleeps and more how you behave with him at different times of the day. We started massaging and bathing DS as part of his bedtime routine very early on, and I always feed in the dark overnight and put him straight back to bed after his feed. During the day, I feed frequently and we cluster feed every afternoon from about 4pm to tank him up for the night. He has always slept in a light room with the blinds up during the day. He's currently taking one feed overnight. HTH.
