    Bleeding belly button

My son's umbilical chord fell off on saturday, since then it has bleed and the hole is covered in blood. Going to our GP today. Hope its not infected.

Has anyone had this problem with their newborn?

Alex's belly button bled a little and it's still got a bit of a scab now - and his cord feel off more than 2 weeks ago. I think it's fairly normal - but i guess it does depend on how much bleeding there is?? I just made sure the nappy was always high up around his bb and that way there wasn't too much to irritate it.

MCHN told me it was normal for belly button to bleed a bit & look gross (& smell bad!). Apparently the cord is gangrenous - that's what makes it fall out (yuck!)

Jack's fell off really early and also bled. The GP said it was fine, just to use cotton bud to keep the area clean and keep the nappy below it for air flow. It didn't get infected.

Same thing happened to my son last week. Asked the GP and he said use a 50/50 Metho/water mix and a cotton wool bud and clean down into the bottom of it twice a day. Seems to be doing the trick of drying it out.
