i hate seeing her so upset about going to sleep, i like to think that she see's her bed as a comfy safe place. the past two night she has also woken and needed ME and me only to resettle.
someone help us, i dont want every sleep to be like this
Sorry that you didn't get a reply - I only just saw this my love...
Cot to bed is a scary thing for some! My DS now at 8 sleeps fine in his bed but the transition at 2 1/2 was super super troublesome. I did the whole new Thomas doona - new bed - exiting,,, Alas my boy had other opinions! He screamed blue murder and ended up in my bed - wouldn't even go back to the cot. Slowly we did it. I would lie on the bed with him and read - sit on it and play - all the while talkng about how comfy it was and that it was Finn's bed! Slowly he fell in love with it - it took about 6 weeks of pretty full on transition.
Big hugs - your post brought back some frightful memories! You WILL get through this - and she will sleep in a big bed - just softly softly.
I had to lay down with Caleb every sleep (day and night) for the first week or so to get him to settle. He had a new room and bed too and freaked out but once he was asleep it was all good and he'd wake up happily.
He loves Thomas so his bed is decked out it in it and that seemed to help. I say "time for sleeps in the Thomas bed" and he loves to get in there. Maybe some linen in a character she loves could help. Let her pick a toy to cuddle in bed too.
I'm sure that if you keep cool and reassure her then she will get used to it and this will pass.
thanks guys.
she was fine til we gave her the choice last night, its a new bed and room we feel she is confused.
her cot is still in her old room, deb i hope it doesnt take 6 weeks but have to accept that it might!
i have thought about sitting with her but scared i'll create a whole other problem!!
i like the idea of linen, now to find some in bananas in pajamas!!
We sit with Jovie on the end of the bed while she falls asleep. The first few weeks of it she wanted to be held etc, and we did that but we've gradually moved to sitting on the end of the bed. I still hold Matilda's hand as she falls asleep. It takes them around 10-15 minutes to fall asleep and we are happy to stay with them.
When Matilda was that age she used to scream for ages, moving to a big bed she took ages to fall asleep but we went form laying next to her to sitting outside the door on a chair.
Just my opinion of course but I think that laying down with them makes them less anxious. Once they are worked up then they take longer to settle too.
I've never had an issue with the transition from needing me to settle to self settling and I did the same for all 3 boys.
Another thing that I did... DD went into her big bed at 18 months in preparation for DS's arrival. She was a bit scared of the "bigness" of the space. So we put a bed rail on one side, the wall on the other, and her favorite teddies stood guard about half way down the bed, creating a false "foot" of the bed, if you will.
We also put her old cot mattress on the floor beside her bed, and she knew that she could get off her bed and go to sleep on the cot mattress if she chose (she hardly ever did that).
We also made it a really nice place to be. Her bed head had two little book shelves, like little hidey holes. So we put little plastic farm animals in there, which she liked.
And even though she had new sheets, blankets etc, for the first few months she still slept with her cot sheet and blanket
Your DD will get there in the end try not to stress about it, you've still got quite a bit of time before gorgeous no. 2 arrives
We used to sit on the bed with Zander & have chats. We'd talk about what he did that day & what we were going to do the next day, then as he got more tired we'd just cuddle with him til he was almost asleep, give him a kiss then walk out. It worked most of the time. Of course she's not going to be able to chat properly, but she can listen & it turns into a nighttime ritual, we still do it now
The others all have great suggestions Jols. One other thing though, can you temporarily move her bed back into her old room? It's been her room all this time, so she's used to it and the night noises she would hear in there kwim? And then when she's used to the bed, make a big thing of her moving into her 'new' room.
