DS got a car bed for Christmas. I had in my mind i had to move him before DD arrived in July as she'd need the cot and planned to in April. But i knew, he is just not ready for it. He wouldnt understand "sleep in your big bed". And i would be up all night and it would be an endless fight and struggle. I was actually in tears with worry about the whole issue as i knew he was and is just not ready for it. But DH said we have a cradle for DD to come home in and if worse comes to worse and he is still not mentally ready by the time she moves out of it we will put her in a travel cot.. or need be, buy another cot.
I was talking to the CHN at Jesse's recent 18 months check up about it. She absolutely agreed. She said you are better waiting until they can understand what is going on, otherwise you will just be up all night. She said some kids stay in their cot until they are 3 years old. And really the only other time you need to worry is when they start to try and climb out of the cot, as its dangerous for them if they fall.
So i think its really up to you, but i am going with what our CHN said. TBH she is the best midwife/CHN i have ever met. She has been seeing both Jesse and i after he was born and everything she has ever suggested has work, not to mension she is just lovely. I really trust her suggestions.
