I have used nail clippers from the start. I wasn't all that confident at the start, so would do it when they were asleep.

I bit Charlotte's off til she was about 6 months from memory....
I always clipped... didn't want to peel and have it tear the wrong way and hurt.
Thanks for all of your replies. The reason I ask is because the hospital told us to peel them off when they have already started to peel. The midwives said that the skin is stuck to the nail underneath when they are little and if you use the clippers you might cut the skin too. I think DS's nails are much harder now and I think the skin would have separated so it would be ok?
I'd imagine his fingers will be fine. When you hold his finger, just push down on the pad of his finger to make the nail sit out/away from his actual finger a bit more before you clip. I hope that makes sense?
I have always used nail clippers and never had any problems.
The skin is stuck to our too if you cut it back far enough. So long as you're careful it's usually all good.
