How do I wean my 20 month old son off breast feeding??

    HI Guys,

I was just wondering whats the best way to wean my 20 month old son off breast feeding altogether. I'm so afraid to start because he's so attached to breast feeding. I think he likes it more for comfort than anything. I really would like to start weaning him off. If anyone has some great tips, that would highly appreciated.

    Any feedback would be great.

Have you checked out the Breastfeeding support forum or sub-forum on weaning?

The ABA has great advice on their website too (breastfeeding.asn.au)

What else comforts your son? If he is feeding for comfort, offer something else to soothe him. Don't cut out altogether, but maybe try to drop (say) feeds in the morning, so just when he wakes up then let him feed at lunch. Gradually increase the time, so go to afternoon snack time, then dinner, then eventually just first and last thing. You can do this over about a month, which is fairly quick. You can stop offering the morning and night feeds when you're ready then: I found when we got down to two feeds, if I didn't offer DS wasn't that interested.

I'd say that this won't be easy at first, but as you get another comforter in place then it should go fairly quickly. And will be easier on your body than just cutting out everything.
