Mine have all been varied. DD3 at 13 months has a good dozen or so already. DD1 didn't have a single word until after 2. DD2 somewhere around a dozen or so. DD1 who had no words now has far far too many ;-)

Mine have all communicated well, while not talking, and with the exception of DD3 who has done both, the first two were far more precocious with physical milestones rather than verbal ones.
