Unhappy Lump in neck of 1 year old

Hi all...our little bubba (1 this week) has a lump in her neck...it's about 2cms round at the moment plus there are smaller ones around it. We've been for ultrasounds, blood tests etc and seen a GP and a paed. They are telling us that it's the lymph nodes and that if it grows at all in the next 2 weeks (which it has already) then they'll have them removed by surgery. The lumps move under the skin and don't seem to hurt. However her blood test results showed that she has a high liver count and a low kidney count as well as high platelets count (all of which apparently aren't too bad in the paed's eyes). She has also had a cough for the last couple of months. I'm worried about leukemia. We noticed the lumps about 3-4 weeks ago when the biggest was only pea sized...they're on her neck down low near the collarbone.

Anyway, my questions is...are there any other bubbas out there with similar lumps and what have you been told??

We went through this with our eldest about 2 years ago.. He had a massive one that measured over 5cm in diameter in his neck plus about 15 more around his neck up to his ears. he had a few smaller ones under his arm as well

he had blood tests and nothing out of the ordinary came back.. We had the C word mentioned to us which completely freaked us out. after about 2 months the lumps seemed to go away and the pead suggested he had glandular fever,. We could have gone and gotten him another blood test but we chose not to as the poor boy had already had so many..

I am not sure how young a child can be to get Glandular fever though,

:hugs: it sure is scary. I hope your little ones lumps turn out to be nothing

My oldest DD has a lump in her neck I'm going to get checked next time I'm in there. I noticed it about 18 months ago, but forgot all about it til I saw it again a few weeks ago. I talked to mum & she told me I had something the same when I was younger & that it was just a lymph node, it went away eventually. I'll be getting DD's checked JIC though.

My little sister had a lump like this and unfortuntely it was lymphoma. Please don't be scared about this as the first blood test they did showed absolutey no doubt that it was cancer so the fact that your little ones didnt' show that straight away is a good thing. Best of luck darl and hope the lumps go away!!

    I'm so scared...

Sorry to hear about your sister...that's terrible... I want to ask if she's okay now but really don't want to know bad news so perhaps I'm best not to ask.

How did they know that it was lymphoma from the blood test results? Did she have a specific test done? Or was it the kidney/liver & platelets counts that showed it up?? I'm wondering if Kaity's was just in the early stages when she was tested (it was only a week after we found the little pea sized lump).

My DS has had a lump on his neck for about 12 months, surrounded by some smaller ones. It is very much as you've described, although smaller. His is a bit bigger than pea-sized, and moves quite freely. I took him to the GP about it earlier this year, as I wasn't sure if it was getting bigger. DH and I were privately very worried it was the C word. But neither of us told the other until after the ultrasound, which showed that it was indeed lymph nodes, and no need to worry.

FWIW, I still have a twinge of panic every now and then when I look at it (it's quite obvious). But I figure if it still worries me next time I take him to the GP I'll ask about it again. It sounds as though your HCPs have been very thorough, although I understand it's hard not to worry. Would a second opinion make you feel better?

I'm wondering the same thing...would a second (or third in this case) opinion help...hmmm...it definitely wouldn't hurt... I wonder if another doctor could get a hold of the results easy enough if I went somewhere totally different?!?!?! I have a copy of some of the blood test results but not the ultrasound results...all of which are at least a week old now, some are 2 weeks old now.

Thanks Megan. It's growing at a crazy rate (was about 1.5 cms last Thursday and is now about 2 cms) and it's sort of got a red patch around it...not sure if that's just us feeling it every 2 minutes or if it's like an infection type patch. I'm soooooooo scared!!!! I had another teary morning...I'm trying so hard to focus on her birthday party but keep getting sad. I'm so scared.

    Now you're making me teary!

Janie suggested another opinion... personally I would probably go with that option. Then you have to think about the extra tests Kaity will have to go through and you still may end up with no answer. It's a hard one. A Dr should be able to get her last lt of results easily enough. You may need to request them.
Apart from the cough you mentioned, is she otherwise happy and well?
I hope you are able to enjoy her special day

Wishing you the best of luck, if you had the Us done at hospital you can just request a copy of the films, shoul'nt be a problem. I was going to say lymph nodes as well my son had quite large ones and at the base of his head, but not that large and growing so quickly, yes go and get more opinions..but if you trust someone (Dr wise) listen to them, sometimes you can get more confused if you see too many people.

My brother recently had this. It is not cancerous but required surgery to remove it. IS something different to what has been posted by people though.

Will have to come back with the name of it, but the specialist said it is something that they are born in utero with. Will be back with more info.

Hoping it is nothing to serious

Here is the link. It was called a branchial cyst.

On the flip side, my niece had some lumps removed from a similar area and they turned out to be nothing to worry about. I can't remember the explanation for them or what they were called but I'll find out and let you know.

Thought you might like to hear a best case scenario

Thanks everyone! I don't know if I am imagining it or not but I almost think the lump is going down a little...gosh if that's the case I would be so very happy and relieved because I didn't expect it at all! I will update you again in a few days and let you know how it's going. I was so very happy this morning when I felt it and it reallly does feel a bit smaller?!?!?!??!?! OMG!!!!!!

Hi, my DS1 had a lump on the left side of his neck when he was born. He was already seeing a Paed and a Paed Surgeon for another matter so we were ablt to get that checked at the same time.

It was a sternomastoid tumour which basically means "lump in the neck". Please note tumour does not mean cancer, it means lump (in this case). We were told to simply wait until he was 2, and if it was still there then they would remove it. It was not necessary to remove immediately. We were happy to go with this decision (too many other health issues on our mind already!) and wait and see. The lump at it's biggest was about the size of a marble. There was no pain to DS associated with it, and the skin above it was the same color.

The lump gradually shrunk and disappeared, I think by the time he was about 1?

End result, we didn't have to do anything. HTH.

it sounds like a tough time.

If DD has a cough, then it would make sense her lymph nodes are swelling as she fights the infection. They are glands, and will change shape depending on her body's response to the infection.

If your HCP have said not to worry, then I would say they are sure it's not the C word. Drs are very quick to act as soon as they suspect anything serious, especially with children.

It sounds like you may be feeling better now, but I just wanted to offer some support.

its so hard not to worry! I always tell DH its my job!

I spoke to my SIL and her DD had a clump of glandular tissue that grew rapidly but it was benign. They tried to biopsy it and as it was inconclusive it needed to be removed under GA so they could know for sure what it was.

Initially the Dr thought it to be cartilage left over from when the embryo is developing. Apparently it has something to do with the ears and is quite common!
