Maybe gastro - what to look out for?

    Hi!!

We might have a case of gastro going through the house. Not too sure tho cause DH first thought he has food poisoning and was in bed for two days. Then yesterday my stomach starting cramping up real bad and I spent most of the afternoon on the toilet, today is it cramping but thats it.

So now I am worried that DD may be getting it. She has had two major spews tonight, both were after a feed. She does have an ear infection at the moment. So what should I be looking out for if it is gastro? And do I need to get her in to see a doctor or only if she is throwing up constantly?

You want to watch for deydration hun, so make sure she is still having her normal wet nappies, and drinking and keeping down her fluids... you can water down her milk a bit if you think her tummy is upset, and if she has diarhea (sp?) then just watch that doesn't go on too long either. Offer her small frequent drinks throughout the day. to you all, hope you all get better soon.

    Thanks Tan!

I've been a bit naughty today and didnt offer water much but it wasnt until about an hour ago the spews started and now she is in bed asleep.

Thanks for the tip on watering down her milk. Her second spew was after a bottle of milk!! Not nice, I got covered and so did the couch!

Awww that's yukky!! hope you all get better fast! I'm not sure as to tell tale signs apart from the obvious - really soft to runny pooey nappies and/or vomiting, temps and if you've had cramping, just watching her for the same type of pain. Poor lovey with an ear infection on top!! Oh hope she stays clear for hers and your sakes!!

I agree with Tanstar too on the water if you can but not heaps all at once as it can make her little tummy too bloated. So like Tanstar said, small and frequent through out the day. Thinking of you all lovey

We have all been sick recently with the gastro bug..its been going around sydney so many people have had it.. ds started spewing and was off food for a few days... he couldnt have milk he'd just throw it straight back up again.. 2 days later my partner and i woke up to throwing up all morning and needing to stay in bed all day... We started off having the bad cramps aswell

As for the docs there isnt much they can do at all...but tell you dehydration is the most important factor...they rec. the gastrolyte which is a powder form you mix with water... you get the baby formulation thats flavoured. it contains electrolytes which rehydrate you... especially important as when you vomit you lose alot of sodium/water from your body...

You should all be back to normal within 2 weeks... DS is so happy again now..and is in to all his food again...

If your little one is having trouble holding milk down you could use a lactose free formula... or offer rice milk which is a great alternative as its sweet and yummy for them...(its very much the same consistency as breastmilk i think,,,and ds loves it.

Just make sure you clean your home well afterwards, dissenfect toys, doors, tables, toilets, showers etc... to get rid of the nasty bug...

They also say allow 24-48 hrs after the last vomit before close contact with other people because gastro is highly contagious so you will give it to others, and you dont want that

You wouldnt wish it upon anyone... its horrible

    Get well soon

    Hi.
DD2 had rota virus when she was 6 months old. It started on the sunday. I took her to the doc on Tuesday who just said to keep an eye on her wet nappies. Took her back on Thursday coz she was still sick. She still wasn't dehydrated, so went home again. Went back on the Friday & was sent to the hospital for monitoring.
Ended up getting transfered to a bigger hospital for the night, but they were still amazed she wasn't more dehydrated.
I cut out milk & she only had water from the Tuesday. I think it's 10 mls every 10 minutes.
She did lose some weight, but it's the water you have to keep up. Milk & other foods can feed the stomach bug & make it worse.

well I do think it is gastro. I've just tried to give her a breastfeed, she came off and then everything came back up again. What am I meant to do? She cant keep down food and she cant keep down milk. She seems to be ok with water as she had a little bit and was fine..

My poor munchkin has to suffer from an ear infection AND gastro!

Felix had gastro just a few weeks ago...it's awful!

Keep offering fluids...even if she vomits them up, she may not be vomitting up everything (although it can feel like that!)

You can also get those electrolyte icepoles from the chemist...which help! You can either offer them to Avaleigh as frozen icepoles or put them into her water bottle (unfrozen).

It's pretty awful...we ended up at A+E as we weren't sure what to do...if Avaleigh become ++lethargic or really floppy, take her to A+E but otherwise just keep the fluids up..

Hope you all get better soon...it's horrible!

Aww hun, I would definately get some gastrolyte, I forgot this time around but will definately use them next time, just so I know that she is having something. Iz didn't really eat over the 2 days - a tiny bit of soft stuff and that's it and watered down milk. (2 a day) When Izzy had it last time she was very lethargic after throwing up and had a bit of a fever but it was just a 24 hour thing. We called Nurse On Call as well, they were great - asked heaps of questions and let us know whether to monitor her at home or to take her in to see a Dr. Is she on AB's for her ear infection hun? Could be a reaction or associated with that too, so I would be inclined to take her to your GP if it's open today or go to a clinic to get her checked out.

Argh, I feel like absolute cr@p today. I havent really slept since midnight cause I just felt sick, didnt throw up tho but just felt sick in the stomach. Now I am weak as trying to look after a 1 yr old cause DH had to go to work.

I was wondering if I should be still giving her the ABs for the ear infection? We started them on Thursday and it wasnt until yesterday the throwing up started..

What should I do with food? I was reading last night to not offer any food until 24 hours after the throwing up started. I've been giving her small breastfeeds and water but am afraid she is going hungry

hi - Noah has had gastro twice - the poor thing.. advice i got from gp was..
fluids - as the others have said - bfeeds small and regular and also gastrolyte - small amt often
the thing to watch for dehydration - damp nappy at least every 6 hrs etc etc as the others have said
in terms of food - some things he did recommend - potatoe - small amt often (i did mash) - make with no dairy or oil - literall just mashed potato. also apple is good as the pectin is a binder so helps with runny poo. i made some apple puree and mashed it into fresh steamed rice - this was good. stay away from high sugar items as they can make the poos worse... ( i was giving jelly for a while there... ooops!). stay away from dairy for 7 days or so after the last vomit. exception to this 'live' yoghurt - give this when she can handle it, it helps.
while he had the vomiting and diahorea i gave prob 8 'meals' of a couple of tsp and a small bfeed during the day and bfed one side only as often as poss in the nights (awful when they spew it all up again) and then as he got better i gradually increased the amts of BM each feed and then the food. i stayed away from dairy for about a week after the last vomit.
I also gave a probiotic and live yoghurt as soon as he could handle it after the 2nd bout and i think this helped ensure no recurrence. good luck!!! hope this info helps.
