    Muslin swaddling blankets?

I've been looking at muslin swaddling blankets (aden & anais) and I was wondering if any other mums out there have used those type of cloth? They look REALLY nice and soft and airy, and I am sorely tempted to get some, but the down side is, they cost about $50 (CND) for a pack of 4, which is a fair bit to spend on blankets, when I actually do have a closet full of other stuff....
With my other babies, I have always swaddled them at bed time, but just used a lightweight jersey-type blanket. Are the muslin really much better?
I debated finding some material myself, but I can't find the right sort of stuff. Plus, to find really good quality muslin, and make a two layer blanket, I would probably be close to $12 at least anyways, which is what one costs to buy.
So, tell me, are they worth the money? Are they everything you ever dreamed of?

Muslin is good for summer however everytime i put my newborn in one he always managed to find a way out of it. I had to always wrap him in a flannel wrap sohe couldn't get out!

Both of my girls could wriggle out of muslin wraps in about 5 seconds flat so they weren't good for us. I found that I could wrap them much tighter in jersey and they couldn't escape

Muslin didn't work for DS1, he could get out of it too easily too, but it worked really well for DS2. He still carries his "blankie" everywhere . I bought mine from eBay, they aren't a particular brand, just someone making them themselves. A pack of three cost around $12 at the time.

I made mine, but single layer. I did that so I could get the size I wanted as I swaddled Darcy until 7 months. Nate on the other hand hates being swaddled so they are wasted on him.
You can get a fabric called double muslin which works a bit better.

I was given a set of 3 muslin wraps. They're all single layer and are great for hotter days, using as a sunshade, and for discreet breastfeeding.

Like the other ladies mentioned, they're easier to escape from than cotton jersey so you have to wrap pretty tight for them to be effective.

Now that it's getting a little cooler (we're in QLD) I wrap DS in cotton jersey, then put him in the cradle with two terry nappies rolled up as buffers (they make him feel secure), and use the muslin as a sheet over the whole lot. He seems to like it like that. Then overnight when it's cold I just change the muslin for another cotton jersey or add a light polar fleece blanket over the top.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the info ladies!
These are really big wraps, by the way, so I'm hoping that they would not be too easy to wriggle out of. Do they sell aden and anais in Aus? The info I've found says that's where they're from originally.
I wish I could try one for a while and see if it would work. (Can I take this blankie for a test drive, please. )
Well, I'll keep thinking about it, and see if I can come to a decision on this major issue. The next question is, of course, what colour(s) to get! Have you seen their prints? They're pretty cute. But I don't know what this bean is, so I don't know whether to get gender neutral now, or wait until he/she is born and get the appropriate colour, OR....... have a 3D ultrasound and find out what we're having! (Not just for the blankets, lol.)
    Thanks again!

Im a big fan of muslins, even though its getting cooler they are still awesome for around the house, shading the pram, laying on for tummy time etc.
The muslins we buy come from big w for a pack of 3 its around $12 and they are great quality... I would definately check them out before paying $50!
Best of luck with your Bub

Muslin swaddling blankets are relatively new in Canada (colder climate) and so right now, aiden and anais is all that's available, and even they are really hard to find! Even on e-bay, there's not too much around here.

Oh jeez, I didnt even notice your location! You lucky thing, I love Canada! DP and I were there this time last year, bliss
Maybe google kiddopotumus(sp) and check on ebay also.. they are a great swaddle and I think closer to $20. They have velcro tabs to stop bub escaping but you can change their bot without unwrapping the top...

yep they are closer to $20 for 3-4 here - not necessarily that brand but 100cm or 120cm square. I wonder how much they would cost to post...

My sister gave me two of these and they're FANTASTIC !!!! The velcro makes it quick and easy to swaddle him in, and with the pouch for his feet it's so much harder for him to wriggle his way out. We've got one in stretch cotton and one in polar fleece. Worth their weight in gold!!!

RayRay - I wondered about having some shipped. But I'm afraid the cost is pretty high for shipping. I'll have a look at e-bay for the other kind that were mentioned and see what I can come up with. Maybe if I get desperate, I'll be back to bug you....

    Thanks!

i have also been looking at these the last few days as i am thinking how i will keep this little one warm... i think they are diff from normal muslins the girls are talking about - they are more like little blankets made from muslin material?
aden and anais seem to have normal muslins and these - and i agree they are GORGEOUS designs...
if anyone has used the muslin BLANKETS let me know what you think - i may get one to try it out before i invest in more...

Aden and Anais makes a dream blanket, not for swaddling, but as a cozy blanket for bed time, I think, and "winter warmth" swaddling blankets of 6 (?) layers of muslin, and regular swaddling blankets which are, I think, 2 ply. They are REALLY cute! But all are pretty expensive. The dream blanket is somewhere around $29, the winter warmth ones are $39 for a two pack, and the regular ones are $49 for a 4 pack. All US funds. That's about what I'm finding on e-bay anyways.
And apparently these are made by two Aussie mums who moved to the US and wanted to find blankets like what they had in Aus, but couldn't. So they designed and marketed their own. So, they are Aus in origin, sort of, but not actually made in Aus, as I thought they were at first.
The ones I was curious about were the regular ones. I was half hoping that they would be available cheaply in Australia, and that even with the shipping cost, they would still be a better deal. But it seems from what I can find that the actual A&A blankets cost just as much in Aus as they do in Canada.
I'm looking at the mother's forums from around here (North America)now to see if I can find any second hand. The hunt is half the fun, right?
