Not walking

Hi everyone

So, Daniel is about to turn 15 months old and is still not walking.

He is pulling himself up on stuff and shuffling around furniture like coffee tables etc, but just does not seem interested in letting go and heading off for a wander.

Does anyone else have or heard of a baby as old as Daniel who isn't interested in walking. I'm not worried about whether he'll be able to do it, I just don't think that he can be bothered and is happy crawling about the place. He pulls himself up no worries at all.

He also has a push walking thing that he just is not interested in pushing or walking behind.

Anyway...... just wondering if my boy is unique or what.

My third was the same. She physically took her first steps at about 14 months, but didn't walk proper until about 17 months from memory. The day she walked for good was because we were at a play area with the recycled tyre matting flooring and she was wearing a nice pair of longies, so every time she went to crawl I stood her up again. She didn't crawl (for transportation ) again from that point.

He'll get there I'm sure hun.

My DD didnt walk til she was 14 months and at our playgroup some of the others where closer to 16 months he will do it when he's ready. I even have a friend who has an 11 month old who isnt even crawling yet. I'm sure he is perfectly normal

Of course your baby is beautiful and unique...but not because he is 15 months old and not walking!

My DS walked at 14 and a half months but he was cruising for ages and ages and was never interested in those push trolley things that everybody says will encourage them to walk. One day he just got up and walked and that was that, no more crawling. It was quite literally overnight.

In terms of age though, one of my best friends has had 2 babies and they both did not walk until 17 and a half months. The first time around she was beside herself, her DD was "late" with everything and then her DS came along 3 years later and was exactly the same as his sister. In fact I think he may have even been a bit later. It's not time to worry until 18 months. My friend is now proudly boasting about how the MCHN was so impressed with her DD's intelligence at her 4 year old check. It WILL happen. It's such a big milestone in your life as well as your baby's, it's so hard to be patient sometimes.

My DS has just started - he was one week off being 16 months and he started walking for real by himself instead of hanging onto things. He's still unstable, and will hang onto things if he has to step over things, but is doing well. I was a bit worried about his development too, cos I just wanted him to stop crawling everywhere.
But its true what everyone told me - each in their own time....

Thanks everyone. I was sure he was pretty normal.

Daniel likes sitting and reading books and the walking thing is just a bit of an after thought at the moment.

I saw a baby who was born a week after Daniel the other day. She was running and her mum was chasing, so I was glad that I wasn't doing the same yet.

My GF didn't walk until 18 months, as she said to me once - ever met a child that never learned to walk?!

He'll be chasing you all over the house when he is ready. I'd say all is fine!

My Ds2 crawled at 6 months and we thought look out early walker,,, aged 18 months he walked lol..

Hi Lesty! I can understand your apprehention. DH wasn't an early walker. He was closer to 2 than 1 when he began to walk. His Mum tells me he COULD walk... he just didn't want to. But he didn't "crawl" either, he did this thing with one leg bent and bum shuffled backwards looking over his shoulder What can I say? He's "unique" His parents tried all sorts of things to get him to walk but it wasn't until his cousins came to play that he up and walked. He wanted to play with them but they wouldn't wait for him nor carry him so he up and followed. Never looked back apparently. HTH

My friend's baby was the same - he and DS were learning to walk around the same time. DS was toddling around at 11m, the other lad was 20m. He took to walking a lot quicker than DS and was far more confident to start with.

Not that I'd change DS, but it must be nice to have a baby you don't have to chase everywhere or demands to walk when you're in a hurry!

Ashton is 19mths and has only taken 2 steps alone that is all. Everyone has been saying to me "oh you should take him to physio" etc. I know he is fine and he will do it when he is ready.

He used to walk behind his ride on truck till he had 2 big stacks and he lost alot of confidence. He has been walking around furniture for months and walks fine holding your hand. Just needs the confidence to let go.

Kameron was 1 week of 19mths old when he started walking, and Lachlan was 15 mths old. Trust me when they start walking you'll be wishing they weren't LOL

Thank you all. I suspected as much. Anybody would think his brain had fallen out of his left ear the way people are carrying on about his not walking yet.

DH and I put him behind his walker and encouraged him to walk with it. He toddled across the room rather nicely (bit wibbly, but I expect nothing less). I'm not worried.

Wow, there's a lot more later walkers than you realise! I get comments at times with Oskar too. He's 13 months and no sign whatsoever that he's about to get up and walk. He bum shuffles around and has never crawled. In fact he doesn't even roll - hates being on his belly - has rolled twice, so he can do it but WON'T. He stands up on furniture and the likes and is happy enough to walk a smaller distance holding your hands but then prefers to get down and dirty and do the bum shuffle.

Please don't worry..if there was a problem you would know it...my DD has slightly low muscle tone and hypermobility of her ankles and DOES need physio and it was pretty clear she was a bit floppy..

Even still she is now cruising around furniture and will clearly walk soon (she is 19 months old). She is not quite ready to push anything around but will be soon!

We were only worried because she showed no inclination to stand at all...which has changed! If he is toddling around the furniture he sounds absolutely fine!!

I have known loads of perfectly normal kids who haven't walked until 18 months or later!

Hello! There are two of my friends babies aren't walking yet (they are almost 15 months old). They worry too, but they are cruising furniture and can stand..so that says to me that it's not a physical problem..they just aren't ready to do it yet...I'm sure your little baby will be running away from you sooner than ever (and then you'll wish they couldn't!!). Don't stress, just enjoy .
