Oral Trush

My DS has oral thrush and I have gotten medication for him but what should I use on my nipples. I had heard that Daktarin twice a day is good but am interested in hearing what others have used. Thanks a bunch.

I know nothing about thrush, but the thought of puttin gdaktarin on my nipples and having them in DD's mouth doesnt sound right.
I would look into a natural alternative...do you need to treat your nipples? I would never have thought of that! lol

Maybe ask your chemist to recommend something? My daughter had oral thrush about a month or so ago (she's breastfed as well) - told the dr that and he said that I didn't need to use anything on my nipples. I didn't get it either!!! Saying that though, my neice had it when she was little and my sister did get it in her nipples, I'm pretty sure she just put the medicine she was giving bubby on her nipples.

But definitely talk to your chemist or dr - they should be able to recommend something.

Sadly I have some knowledge and experience on this. It still makes me wince with pain just thinking about it!

Charlie (who is now nearly 3) had oral thrush from about 6 weeks and he and I would've just continually kept re-infecting each other. As it was I did get nipple thrush and I can honestly say it was THE most painful thing ever and I nearly gave up BF'ing as a result. (I didn't, ended up getting to 6 months with him, but it sure was close!)

I used Daktarin gel in his mouth. And Canestan on my nipples. Then before a feed I would wipe the Canestan off my nipples and smear a little Daktaren on. Then after the feed was finished I would reapply lots of Canestan. (This was all based on the advice of my post natal midwife.)

I ended up with a cracked nipple too and used Calendula on it which was amazing.

Inner Heath probiotics or InLiven would also be really useful to ward off the nasties too.

Hi, when DS was 2 weeks old MCHN said he had oral thrush. At first I was afraid to give him anything so i went to see my gp who prescribed the same thing. Basically nilstat drops for DS and dactarin oral gel on my nipples. I was told to use the gel after feeds and I think it did the trick.
As Lucy said, taking some probiotics help too. Another option is to include garlic into your diet. Hope it clears up soon.

Thanks for all the advice. It is starting to clear up on DS and I ended up using Daktarin on me and wiping it off before each feed. Next time I think I will use the oral gel, it sounds a bit friendlier.
