For Lindsay's 1st birthday, we made him a toybox LOL, a big one with a drawer on the bottom. As for those toys you were talking about with the wooden base and the metal puzzle with the beads to push on it, try checking out modernteachingaids they supply preschools and daycares and they have some pretty good stuff.
