Talking She may be slow thriving in weight but she is thriving in other ways.

Emily started pulling herself up onto furniture 5 days ago. Today she starting walking along it . She also let go of the box and stood up alone for a few seconds . We have had a lot of stress due to Emily being put down as "Failure to thrive" having to see pediatricians and I'm so proud of my baby girl, she may be little 6.3kgs but she is a very determined little girl.

Awww, isn't she just a clever little chicken

DD was almost the eaxact same weight as your DD at the same age, but she was prem so they weren't concerned about her weight as much, as she had gone from being 1kg below the charts to hitting the 1st%ile it at 6 months, I couldn't imagine what she would have looked like walking along the couch at that age

but DD2 is nowhere near pulling herself up onto things yet!

That's great! My DS was the same weight as your little one at 6 months and no one was ever concerned about it. The MCHN nurse just said he was just a little bub (still is) and most certainly never saw a paed about it. Very interesting.

Skybie & allycat - thats weird. The MCHN nurse was making us go in every week for her to be weighed, then she had to see the GP and then he sent her to the paed. He thinks she is okay, just little but she has to go back again in July. It been very stressful. Maybe its because she had a high birth weight 9lbs1oz What was your babies birth weights?

Kim - Hi Maybe my mchn and doctor over-reacted, I don't know. You are the 4th reply with a 6 month old weighing 6kgs. Maybe it common .

My little man was born 9lb 10oz, and weighed in at 8.1kg at his 4 month check up lol
Its all got to do with genes! She is clearly doing very well, you should be proud

DD2 was 7 pound 8(3550) at birth, but she was 4 weeks early, so she did have a high birth weight for her gestation

Yowie DS was 6lb 13oz, he was full term. I'm a tiny thing and DH is tall and skinny. DS has always hovered around the 10th percentile for height and weight and I too got quite concerned but the MCHN told me it's nothing to worry about as long as the height and weight match up. It would only be an issue if he was in the 10th percentile for weight and say the 90th for height. That being said my MIL told me DH was always way off the charts for height (very tall) and near the bottom for weight, he's always been slightly built. So who knows!

Perhaps as your DD was born quite big her weight plateaued out a bit earlier than some. Are you and your hubby small people? I find it odd that your MCHN was so concerned...6kg at 6 months is still like the 3rd percentile, I thought they'd only get worried if they drop off the chart completely. What's she like lengthwise? It sounds like she is perfectly healthy and doing just great Standing up and cruising around furniture at 6 months is awesome!!

Em had her first bump on her on head today . She pulled herself up on the tv unit, stood there and watched tv, then let go and went straight back and hit her head on the floor. She cried and cried. I felt bad I couldn't catch her in time.

tellytubby - I'm sure his gorgeous.

    skybie - She is beautiful!!

allycat - I don't know why they were so concerned. The gp started talking about kidney problems and stuff . They had me so worried that I put her on formula part time. But I think she did need it becase her nappies weren't very wet at all. She is on the 25% for height. I'm 168cm and Dh is 172cm and we are both overweight atm but we both have a small/med build when we aren't carrying the weight.

    Poppetty - thanks.

Yowie - My DD was 4.01kgs at birth (which is 8lb 13oz). She was on the 90th percentile for weight at birth. From there she just didn't put on much weight. At 6 months she was 5.680kgs (so smaller than your DD and under the 3rd percentile!). I was lucky that my MCHN wasn't worried, but she did keep suggesting that I should BF more. Then eventually she said maybe I should see a paed. And by that stage I was worried too. So at 5 months I took DD to a paed who told me to give formula + glucose top ups, which I did do and like your DD her nappies were wetter. She did get fatter but I realised it didn't make her grow any more in any other way, so after a couple of months I stopped it. But I was still worried so saw another paed when DD was 12 months. He ran all kinds of tests and they all came back that DD was (and still is!) a perfectly healthy girl, not lacking in any nutrients. He said whatever I did worked for my DD. From then on I let my worry go and now I see my DD for what she is - a healthy, happy girl who is rarely ill and meeting all milestones (just in a smaller package .

Really now in hindsight I don't understand why weight is seen as such a big indicator of health. I think the whole picture needs to be looked at - Is their some growth (height, width OR weight)? Is the child happy? Is the child meeting milestones? A lack of weight gain may warrant investigation but if nothing is found to be wrong, then that child is meant to be small!

If you aren't happy with your paed then find another one cos a good paed should be able to put your mind at ease if nothing is wrong!

Here's to small, healthy, happy children.
