To wake day sleeping baby or not

    Hullo

My question is basically if it is advisable to wake a baby who sleeps a lot during the day so that she will be better rested at night?

My one month old DD sometimes has rather long sleeps in the day time. Her night sleeps have always been great in that she feeds well and goes back to bed without any hassle. I think she is able to find more reasons to stay up really late seeing as DH and I are currently both on leave and tend to be night owls.

    Thanks in advance,

My question is basically if it is advisable to wake a baby who sleeps a lot during the day so that she will be better rested at night? I'm equally wary of dealing with a cranky, over tired baby at night.

I think she is able to find more reasons to stay up really late seeing as DH and I are currently both on leave and tend to be night owls.

To clarify, a long day sleep would be 3 to 4 hours. She may have 2 such sleeps in the hours from 9am to 7pm.

    Thanks in advance,

I think this is fairly common for her age to sleep for that long, however she will probably soon want to be awake longer in the day as she gets older. I used to just keep the feeds up to my little one during the day so she didnt need to take as much during the night and it really worked for her. El goes to bed usually by 7pm, 730 at the latest. And the longer you have them up doesnt mean they will sleep in, El usually wakes up the same time every morning which can be anything from 6am.

Around 6 wks of age is when i started to see a real difference in El's pattern, she suddenly wanted to stay up that little bit longer during the day but was tired again around 1.5-2 hrs later, thats when i would put her back to bed again. It is amazing how fast they grow. Sounds like your doing a great job so far.

    Good luck

At that age definately not, & lucky you for having a little bubs that does sleep & you can get some rest yourself. My little one never slept & it was a nightmare. Unless you've been advised to wake for feeds due to weight or something like that there's no need to wake a sleeping baby.
The only time I wake Charlie is if he's gone down late in the arvo & is still asleep around 5.30pm as I want him back in bed at a decent hour that night. DH & I too like to stay up, but honestly we like to spend some time together having a conversation & dinner so we love the Charlie is in bed sound asleep by 7.30pm. Also the better a baby sleeps during the day the better they sleep at night. Also at that age & this is just my opinion...I wouldn't try to keep bubs up too late at night as she needs to establish the difference between day & night, also the later a bubs up doesn't mean they will sleep longer in the morning & some will still be up early which means they miss some sleep at night.

As everyone has said..nup dont wake!!

Even now at 9 and half months i refuse to wake Chelsea no matter what time it is or for what ever reason. I dont believe a child should be woken.

Granted Chelsea had never been much of a day sleeper from birth....but a top night one...couldnt ask for more!

Nup, I wouldn't be waking her! What a great bub! My little man still doesn't sleep much in the day, wish he had when he was smaller so I could've had a rest...lol.

I was just discussing this with my mum. My little man isn't even a week old yet and has been sleeping 3-4 hours before even looking like he wants a feed. I asked if I should wake him and Mum said no way, that is the other side of demand feeding I guess. So I have been letting him go and it just means that when he does wake he feeds for about an hour.

I used to think the same thing! But no don't! I just made sure there was lots of light during the day even when DD slept so she would get used to the whole night and day situation!

Hi neuri, usually I think it's best not to wake a sleeping baby unless you're under specific instructions to feed it more often (like a newborn with jaundice).
If bubs is happy and you're happy there's no need to mess with it. She'll come round to daylight time soon enough....

    Neuri,

don't stress darl. she's only little, she needs lots of sleep. Xavier has slowly been telling me he doesn't want to be asleep all the time in the last week or so.

Enjoy the you time while she sleeps. Especially if she goes to sleep at night no probs. if she wasn't I'd be thinking differently

Sorry, but haven't you got this thread already going???
Unless bubs needs to be wokend for feeds due to being underweight etc then nope I wouldn't wake a sleeping baby. During the day I'd be using that time to rest myself.
