As for there being more risk than benefit with vaccinations, I think that is entirely untrue. Vaccines have been proven to reduce the RISK of many deadly childhood diseases (although they are not 100% effective...but is anything?). They are effective enough though to warrant government subsidies, WHO recommendation and vaccine programs in almost all developed countries. In fact, if more children in undeveloped nations had access to the kinds of vaccines we do, they wouldn't be such a high morbidity/illness rate from diseases such as polio.

One of the problems here though (and a little bit of a tangent here), is that kids in underdeveloped countries are at higher risk to the side effects because their immune systems are already so low. A mass vacc in the Philippines blew he death rate for the same diseases through the roof.

This is interesting, and I believe there were at least two types of polio vaccinations in the 60's, one which went on to become the vaccine used today (an attenuated form of the disease developed by Sabin) and another which was stopped due to the higher risk of children developing the disease (produced by Salk, but stopped because 10 deaths were linked to the vaccine particles not being entirely "de-activated")

It seems to be the paradox with vaccinations that outbreaks of the disease can be connected to the vaccine. In most cases of this occurring in places like Indonesia, Nigeria and the Phillipines, this is due to a low population of vaccinated people, so that a vaxed child excretes the disease and then it is contracted by a non-vaxed child, where the disease mutates and is then active again.

This is why the idea of "herd immunity" is so important.
